its their most "proggy" album yet, by far...probably why i love it so much.

I am definitely digging this far more than any previous Mastodon release. As a side note, I saw these guys at Ozzfest one year. They were as tight as a drum.

i actually listened to the entire thing ... it started off good, but then it kind of all bleneded together as it went along.
standout track on first listen is track 2, mostly for its jamming and memorable vocal lines

I don't like the tracks Crack the Skye and Quintessence, because the songs feel like they just don't go anywhere.

I do kind of miss their huge fucking riffs, like in Remission.

Some of the vocal line remind me of Oversoul/Memory Driven/Dwell Within, and I think it comes from the slight grunge influence?

One problem I have with this band and still do; while this album sounds better to these ears, I just can't wrap a visual image around their music. Its rather forgetable somehow. I never really heard a track that sucked me in on any of their releases.

This disc has impressed me so much, I just grabbed tickets to their Philly show (both NYC shows were sold out).

In part, that's true. Part of what kept me at arm's length, has been their goat awful vocals.

Threw on Blood Mountain. I'll be damned if Colony of Birchmen isn't the best song these guys have penned. Though I listen to them few and far between, they've yet to do wrong in my eyes.

Interestingly... this disc is a concept album, in part inspired by the suicide of the drummer's sister Skye, at the age of 14. In addition, Mastodon will be performing the "Crack the Skye", in its entirety on this tour. Seeing them in Philly. Couldn't be more psyched.

There is. It's a voice modulator set to a really high pitch while a dude screams into it I believe. Live they do it similarly with a pick on it's side sliding up and down some of the strings but it sounds really odd. Only there for about 10 seconds every once in a while.

Sounds better outside of the intro though.

Crack the Skye is definitely out of their comfortable vocal element...

Flawless playing on both though!
