New Sabaton Details Have Me Skeptical...

Because I don't think they're hurting for money at this point. I think they're a solid brand, a money making operation, and I don't think one album in a non-english language is going to stop anyone from buying the next one that comes out. It's also not like they're going to be playing this album in it's entirety at shows either, unless maybe some shows in Sweden.

Sabaton: The band everyone hates on for being "unoriginal" and turns around and bitches about the fact they're trying something new.

Singing in a different language is nothing new. Plus, people usually mean how they write their music. You can't really say they're "original"...

I understand what people have said so far. I think the best point about a "singalong" band in another language is Korpiklaani. Those guys have taken "fun party folk metal" to a completely different level.

The Falconer point is weak, though. Falconer is not a fun-time singalong band. I find them to be more serious and artful like Kamelot. I think Armod is a great album, and I still listen to it relatively often. But like Milton said, Sabaton is more about the live experience. Their sound has remained relatively unchanged since Primo Victoria and live you forget how samey some of their songs are. So for them to go full-on Swedish makes me think..."Well there's a few songs I'm gonna have to sit out for when the choruses come in."

Kvelertak and Rammstein are fun singalong bands that sing in other languages also and both are bigger than Sabaton.

Bam.

I don't get the complaint. It's another language, big deal, right?

Although (and I'm not referring to anyone here, mind you) the idea of a bunch of rednecks brandishing confederate flags to protest a Sabaton show 'cuz they ain't speakin' 'murican does sound great.

Is Kvelertak really bigger than Sabaton? Festival billings, tour billing, last.fm users, etc all lead me to believe otherwise, but I don't have album sale info so......

I know this isn't the kind of festival you were talking about, but oddly, Kvelertak is playing Bonnaroo this year, as the only band in the whole lineup even close to metal (well, actually I think The Joy Formidable is pretty close to being a metal band too). I don't see Sabaton anywhere on that list!! :loco:

Sabaton is an incredibly fun live band. But with regard to songwriting, they're something of a one-trick pony. I like them, but I don't expect anything significant from their studio output at this point.

Heh, yeah, I thought that was weird too! Bonnaroo's opened up to metal over recent years with bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Down, Mastodon, Metallica, Shadows Fall, and a couple more, but Kvelertak is the only one on the bill right now -- there are rumors that Danzig is going to be added though. I haven't been to that fest since 2007 but am trying to go back this year. Overall it's a very good lineup.

Sabaton wasn't playing Bonneroo or touring with Comeback Kid playing to hundreds of people a night on their first album. In the us, Kvelertak just signed up with Mastodon's agent. Band is going to be stupid huge.

Ok, maybe in the future, yeah, but not right now. Playing Bonnaroo doesn't make you big -- I've been to that festival -- there are lots of smaller bands there and take a look at Kvelertak's place on that billing. Kvelertak isn't headlining festivals OVER Entombed or co-headlining with bands like Helloween....in fact, the only festival I can find that they played with Sabaton, Sabaton headlined and Kvelertak had a support (although high up!) slot. I agree they're going to get big but right now......no way they are bigger than Sabaton. Plus, opening for bands doesn't mean you're guaranteed a fanbase....although in Kvelertak's case, it probably does. They toured with Converge too.

I actually like music in other languages (particularly ones I'm familiar enough with to possibly know what they're saying). So I might have to pick this one up!

As to Danish, it's drunken German spoken with marbles in the mouth. It's for reading only, and then barely comprehendible. :D

In Sweden Sabaton is bigger right now for sure. In the US, UK, Norway, and most other mainland territories with the exception of Germany they're inching eachother at the same level with maybe Sabaton being slightly more of a draw. Being right behind Comeback Kid and The Ghost Inside in Europe is a pretty huge deal. CBK isn't all that hot here, but over there it's a big deal - much bigger than Converge. Anywho, this is straws grasping breh. My point is that you can be a successful band without having to sing in ANGLISH.

Finntroll, Korpiklaani, and a few others also do REALLY well in Europe and Scandinavia, although they aren't all that successful over here.

Alot of that has to do with the fact that in Europe, English is spoken, but it's a second language obviously. It's not a requirement for bands to be able to sing in English, because most Europeans don't really put so much stock in a language they're not as equipped with by and large as their native languages. To European peoples, English speaking bands are ALREADY speaking a different language. ;)
