Newest machine (of lamb of god et al mix fame) production

The arrangements are pretty much how they were pre machine. I think a few tempo changes were the biggest thing arrangement wise.

Oh okay, cool. I must say they played well last night and even the clean singing was pretty decent (which I must say I was sceptical about).

Struggled a bit with the lighting of the venue but I might post a pic or two when I'm done editing if anyone's interested..

sorry to bring back an old thread

but god DAMN this record is good. mix is ridiculous. everything about it is just top top top notch.

does anyone else feel like the screams have been processed in such a way that they are more.... "digestible"? by that I mean, more acceptable to people that wouldn't normally like screaming. less abrasive or something, I don't know. more top 40 and less "my girlfriend can't listen to that shit"

(by the way that tempo change at the end of one of the earlier songs is probably the most tasteful and effective tempo change I've ever heard, and 2:41 in "anchors" is like the heaviest thing I've ever heard without actually being a really heavy part)

i love everything about this mix and the machine shop. I have been too machine' studio a few times (my friend is an AE over there) and needless to say everytime i went there, i stared at his amps for about an hour, played video games, stared at some more gear and rode a ripstick around for about 3 hours every day. Best few days of my life

also, you said sm7b for all vocals. that means clean too??? wow

Yeah, Machine does all his vocals with the dudes in the control room into an SM7b with a pop filter for the most part.

Check out the Four Year Strong album Enemy of the World - almost entirely clean/slightly dirty vocals, all through SM7b.

for the gang vocals, machine had them in front of the monitors blaring, around the mic, and then just hit a kill switch on the monitors as the line came and went.

Just re-read the thread, must have missed this. This is how I've been doing gang vocals, works SUPER well with the TC Level Pilot.

Hey can some of you guys tell me what the purpose is of in front of the monitor recording?
Basically to get some 'double' effect ?

Usually because it's more comfortable for the singer. If you are talking about directly in front, I dunno. But doubling wouldn't be done that way.

that's so cool, whenever i put a clean singer in front of the sm7 it sounds really muffled and weird(but it does seem to sit them into the track nicer)

he must be adding a bunch of top end or something in the mix

Remove the foam cover, use an external pop filter. Problem usually solved by that, or you can use the presence boost on the mic if you need even more top end!
