Norse Metal

are you saying that Bathory is not a band that uses Norse Mythology in its sound and lyrics?

Bathorys Blood fire death, hammerheart, Twighlight of the gods, blood on ice, and nordland one and two are the best Representitive of bands taking on the Viking spirit, with out comming off like idiots.

as much as I like Enslaved, Burzum, and even some TYR(though most is not that great tbh) Bathory/Quorthon embodied VIKING. From the sound, to the lyrics.
period.

yeah Bathory and Enslaved (especially early Enslaved), plus:

Windir
Thyrfing
Skyforger
Moonsorrow
Mithotyn
Suidakra
Turisas
Tyr
Ensiferum
Finntroll
Einherjer
Borknagar
Falkenbach
Korpiklaani

'Viking' describes an era of general Scandinavian history, and includes several different peoples. 'Norse' refers specifically to Norwegian culture (and can be extended, at least in the early period, to Icelandic society, which was settled from Norway and spoke Norse). Bathory's work references a more generalized Viking world. In fact, it references a common mythology that, for the most part, isn't even exclusively Scandinavian, but in fact, part of a broader Germanic pre-Christian tradition. Burzum's music includes many direct references to specifically Norse culture (and language). Enslaved's early music draws its central themes and stories mostly from Icelandic sources that preserve specifically Norse traditions. Bathory's take on 'vikings' includes nothing that could be called 'Norse' to the exclusion of other Scandinavian traditions.

Many of these bands are actually Finnish, (eg. FINNtroll, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, etc.), and Finnish mythology is rahter different from Norse. I am taking a class called "Mythology in Northern Europe", and I am doing a research paper on Norse influence in modern music, particularly metal. How fucking sweet is that?
Thanks for all the advise y'all.
