I tried the Mars Volta album since everyone keeps raving about it.... found it none too spectacular. Just weird.

Assuming you checked out Frances the Mute, that is why. Deloused in the Comatorium is more accessible, and in my opinion, a better record. I suggest giving that one a whirl. Though chances are if you thought Frances was "weird" you most likely won't dig the band in general.
