Another thread got me thinking about this, so I'll ask...

...despite the overuse of this piece in just about anything, on its own merits, is this not one of the most impressive slices of music ever?

No matter how much I hear, I keep coming back to this. Orff was a genius. He managed to pack everything there is that makes Hell scary into music.

Thoughts?

I saw Trans Siberian Orchestra play that live one time. It was beyond fucking awesome...they had pyrotechnics and all sorts of other shit...it was Hell on earth

my music theory teacher was talking about Carmina Burana, and how it was highly controversial back in the day because of the lyrics (I forget exactly why...I think they were incredibly sexual er something)

The lyrics were indeed controversial, unknown.

I think it's one of the most overrated pieces of music ever, and I dislike Carmina Burana as a whole.

It is. There are few songs ever (classical or modern) that I can think of that match its power and scope.

Agreed on Mars being the only valuable Planet, and on O Fortuna being fairly good (though overrated) - it certainly fits contextually, but the piece as a whole is somewhat bland.
