O/T "45% of Americans believe the Earth was created by God in the past 10,000 years"

I'm not an atheist; I do believe in something. I just believe that nobody on Earth has really nailed it down yet. And the way we're acting down here, I would't be too keen on telling the people what was really going on either, if I was god.

My point is this, though. Creation stories are just that; STORIES. They were written to soothe the fear & curiosity of a people that, at the time, didn't understand science, but wanted to know what was. Think of creation stories as god talking to us about the beginning of the universe the way we talk to our small children about babies or the inner workings of a 2005 Ford Mustang. How in the fuck would you explain to a small child, who doesn't have the concept of science & learning, how the engine works? It's the same with creationism. Those stories were set in place to soothe our minds until we were ready to work in science to see how god/gods did it.

And no, I don't believe that science & evolution compromise faith. They add to our knowledge of how the world really works. For example, a friend of mine is Asatru (sic). He's a steward for the Troth, which is a group of this belief. For all of you that don't know what it is, Asatru is the worship of the gods of the norse.

Anyways, the norse creation story involves a big fucking glacier, and the univers being created out of the body parts of a giant. No shit. I asked him if he believed in the story of Ginnungagap (what I just was talking about), and he said "uh, no!"

Simply put, you don't have to believe everything about a faith to be faithful. 'Cuz alot of the stories are bullshit ;)

guessing how old the earth is is done by carbon dating right? Are there any conditions that could cause carbon to decay at a faster rate? If so then that really opens up the question on how old it really is doesn't it.

Too the idiot who smacked me for one missing letter out of a whole thought: CRAZY FOR FEELING SO LONELY. I'm still the cool motherfuker who comes to this board very often. Don't even get on my badside b/c I will find out where you live and possibly kill you (NO pun in intended). Also, there has been some really cool responses of this thread and I apologize if I was too foward with anyone, especially Suffer. It was just the heat of the moment. Rock on and not psycho!!!

Ah, ye old norse stories. They are very entertaining! The Yggdrasil, Fenrisulven and the gigant Jotun! The thing I like about the stories about Asarna is that they seem to be very tounge in cheek. I suppose it was as serious as any religion but they gods have quirky personalites and makes mistakes just like people.

I would comment on this thread. But, since I'm a scientist, you probably can figure out my position. (ie the earth was created 7 million years ago as a giant computer program to answer the question of the meaning of life. The fjords are pretty nice too.)

Oh yeah, over 90% of the world believes in a higher power of one form or another....maybe you godless idiots are missing the boat

Exactly!!! One form or another!!! The Arabs worship Ala!!! The Asian's Buddha!!! On the Indian reservations they worship several Gods!! Christian religion is split into several categories all telling you their interpretation of the bible!! So who's to say the Asians aren't right and everyone worshiping others gods aren't condemned?? Too many loop holes in religion, Seems like one giant facade!!

A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a fuckin' cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on. :Spin:

ROFLMAO, Or talking to survivors of the Holocaust with a Nazi party pin on!!....hehe :muahaha:

"Why can't we all just love every cunt? That's all I'm saying"

Orphans.
Peter Mullan.

Rent it. It's probably in the arthouse/foreign section, but rent it.

Um... what came first the computer or the internet. Luv ya Rem but if you're not gonna comment then um...don't. And by labeling oneself a scientist I must what.. automatically assume that there is no God. B/c somewhere at sometime somebody came up with the idea of documentation and then eventually the scientific method of writing something down that gets done over and over until it's a phenomenon. And then were told don't even believe in that b/c it could be wrong. You would think that when writing became something more than a concept that we would write about oh I don't know..something important to us. And then to what, eventually "evolve" to a point in time to deny that you were unique and special.. Wow! How can u abuse what is right in front of you...under a microscope...and not be able to see how unique and special and beautiful that is and yet so complicated so ugly that it can take peoples life away from them. 7 million years just to achieve this?? You've had the math...7 million?? What have we accomplished in the last 100 years? If the Earth was that old don't ya think chaos would of digested much more than what literature is trying to throw at us?!!! We're getting more organized. Not free-flating randomness like oh 200 hundred years ago.

I'm gonna forever be on probation b/c I picked on ya and yeah fjords can be cool!!:Spin:
