I'm not an atheist; I do believe in something. I just believe that nobody on Earth has really nailed it down yet. And the way we're acting down here, I would't be too keen on telling the people what was really going on either, if I was god.
My point is this, though. Creation stories are just that; STORIES. They were written to soothe the fear & curiosity of a people that, at the time, didn't understand science, but wanted to know what was. Think of creation stories as god talking to us about the beginning of the universe the way we talk to our small children about babies or the inner workings of a 2005 Ford Mustang. How in the fuck would you explain to a small child, who doesn't have the concept of science & learning, how the engine works? It's the same with creationism. Those stories were set in place to soothe our minds until we were ready to work in science to see how god/gods did it.
And no, I don't believe that science & evolution compromise faith. They add to our knowledge of how the world really works. For example, a friend of mine is Asatru (sic). He's a steward for the Troth, which is a group of this belief. For all of you that don't know what it is, Asatru is the worship of the gods of the norse.
Anyways, the norse creation story involves a big fucking glacier, and the univers being created out of the body parts of a giant. No shit. I asked him if he believed in the story of Ginnungagap (what I just was talking about), and he said "uh, no!"
Simply put, you don't have to believe everything about a faith to be faithful. 'Cuz alot of the stories are bullshit
