Anyone heard these guys? They used to be on Napalm Records, and I've heard them compared to Emperor and Nokturnal Mortum. Thing is, I can't find their CDs anywhere....and I'm drooling to hear them.

Help.

I thought they were Cradle of Filth clones.

Their latest album might be (Shepard & Hounds of Hell), based on the 10/10 score it got at metal observer. The two that I've heard people mention are Witchcraft and Soulblight...

how in the hell are they CoF clone? i hear NO cradle in this stuff! it's melodic and complex with great atmosphere, sort of reminds me of a cross between dark tranquillity and emperor's "in the nightside eclipse". i am totally digging this album ("soulblight"). very good stuff (i think this would own you, jaykeeley).

The Shepherd .. is not memorable
Soulblight and Witchcraft rules , one of the best black metal albums ever. Withcraft sounds nothing like Dimmu Borgir . DB is key based , OE is more guitar based . On the two first albums , the drumming is very intense compared to any Dimmu album and Pest dosen't sound like Shargrath at all . All the instruments are very well harmonized together . DB mainly sucks and OE is (very)good . Their first is raw black without keybords , nothing like DB had ever maid .

I've got to check these guys out, the Emperor forum board couldn't stop hailing them as the next best thing. I dug up this review from Metal Observer for Shepard and the Hounds of Hell, and they do mention that Soulblight might have been synthesizer-heavy if there is to be any comparison to DB. Anyway, this reviewer gave the album the perfect score (10/10):

The Norwegians around the former GORGOROTH-front-screamer Pest have thrown all the synthesizer-ballast that could be found on "Soulblight" over-board for their latest effort, handily titled "The Shepherd And The Hounds Of Hell" and now combine their gnarled Melodic Black Metal with the hymnics of Heavy Metal - and excel!

The opener "Scrolls Of The Shadowland" already shows that the blastbeat-parts (thankfully) have been reduced a lot and that Torquemada is allowed to shoot his great stitching-machine-double-bass through the speakers. Also Pest now varies his mean vocals and implements his surprisingly well-sounding clear voice, further complementing the hymnic melody-lines of the guitars. Also in the following tracks they cleverly vary speed, heaviness and intensity, combine brutality and majestic melodies, completely without keyboards and despite sitting between all the chairs, they still reign supreme! "Millennium Beast (Awaiting The Feast)" should be exceptionally mentioned, between aggressive and emotional, gruff and clean vocals, wild fury and powerfully driving double-bass...

The title-track then is the ultimative hymn, which sets the pace with mid-tempo-double-bass, then adding highly melodious guitars, then croaky vocals, before attacking the unsuspecting listener with a high-speed-assault. After that a quiet part with clear vocals follows, just to gain on intensity towards the end again. Without doubt the peak of their career so far, OBTAINED ENSLAVEMENT have produced an album in "The Shepherd And The Hounds Of Hell" that their genre-colleagues will have to gnaw on for a long time!

well, the songs I heard were on label compilations, so you know what that means. The most accessible songs are the ones I heard. And they were keyboard heavy. Wasn't too impressed.

I like this site's black metal reviews, and they didn't like the band: http://larm.cjb.net/

Dream, you're hilarious! You don't like black metal (well, not really) yet you dig the reviews. Is your fiancee posting using your name again?

I like some black metal. I dig Emperor, Sigh, Dawn, Dissection, Aborym, Borknagar, Immortal, Graveland, Ulver, Melechesh, etc.

I just think that site is the most reliable when it comes to black metal.
