Octavarium leaked

I think it's hilarious how you people hate talent, yet you like opeth. You're either the biggest hypocrites ever, or you're just conforming to what other people say so you don't stand out.

edit:

Oh, and Dream Theater rocks. I got train of thought and Live at the Budokan.

this makes no sense... i like opeth because they write great songs with great melodic ideas, enhanced by the musicianship in performance ie solos, drum fills, tightness as a band. dream theater is a band where the chops come first and the songwriting second or, often, not at all. playing fast and in key is a skill, but not one that necessitates great music.

Well your post would be a coherent thought if it were true, however anyone who even puts like 3 minutes into being a fan of DT knows that the songs are written by a few different band members.... and the solos definately do not come first, they just add to the song after it already has established it's foundation. Have you even listened to ToT or what? Because it doesn't sound like it from what you said. "they write great songs with great melodic ideas, enhanced by the musicianship in performance ie solos, drum fills, tightness as a band. This also describes Dream Theater.. Just check out their DVD and the bonus documentaries and you'll see how "tight" they are as a band.

@ Saber Rider: I'ved heard all the DT stuff, I just said I own ToT and the DVD.... Silly goose. I downloaded all the DT stuff. Even the iron maiden bootlegs.

Labrie is a great singer too. He's definately not the best, but I can name several power prog singers right off the top of my head that aren't as good as him.

Such hostility from the opeth forum... :(

ahh....the intelligent criticism i was expecting from the Opeth forum. Based on insights like "sings like a cunt" and "DT blows", I am going to avoid the new album at all costs.

Personally to me, I don't think Dream Theater is this pure musical machine of wankery and guitar/keyboard noodling. I find many, many of their songs to have alot of emotion not only in the guitar playing/singing, but the songwriting and the message. Judging from images and words, awake, scenes from a memory, the a change of seasons track and six degrees of inner terbulence, I think alot of their songs are pretty memorable and should be appealing to anyone into progressive type metal (if they dig the singing as well) or just heavy metal at a more technical level. If you narrow everything down in categories, maybe you won't like them. And also if you're just trying to fit in or be cool by saying the suck, wank too much, or being in plain denial that they have no songwriting skills or emotion then sure, stay that way...you find out later in life that you can't just be a fuckface. Give images and words and awake a thorough, complete listen.

The sad truth is, Labrie is even a better singer than Mikael... I know it's not what you'd like to hear, but its true. He has a much higher range, etc.. (I'm talking about clean singing only) Mike's singing is great though. You guys should just accept stuff for how it is and quit bitchin'!

I prefer labrie over kotipelto anyday..
<Insert names of shy death/doom/black clean vocalist here>
So that adds up to about over 50 people that he is better at singing than..
If you want to go outside of metal genres, then I'm sure there are thousands of vocalists that he is better than. This post is funny, and retarded.. but I think i've made my point.

ok.. I'm going to attempt to give one of the more UNBIASED/NONSKEWED opinions here.. damn some of you are demented. I just listened through the album.. and I have to say it's the most promising material since Scenes From a Memory. No Labrie is not my favorite vocalist by far..and yes his school-girl like cries bother me from time to time. and yes Portnoy's universe sized ego bothers me(much larger than Petrucci's) but they're still a pretty damn solid band. I don't even know if I consider myself much of a DT anymore, but I think the album sounds pretty good.

Obviously, if you don't like DT and never did, you won't like the new album and your post on this thread is meaningless and void.

..And totally unrelated and void, I finally purchased Faith No More - Angel Dust today at the used CD store. I was disgusted to see Dead Can Dance, old Sepultura, Tool, Anathema, Mr. Bungle, COC, and yes (grab a hold of yourselves) THE ENTIRE OPETH CATALOGUE! I don't know what brings some of these sick people to pawn off their metal collections.. Oh, well.. one man's garbage, another's treasure..

Sure james labrie has been musically trained to sing, but his voice sounds horrible and may suit something like power metal, but his voice makes dream theater sound very very dated and he doesnt change his tone that much, he just uses the higher end of the notes and well, even though mikeal probably couldnt go as high as him his voice sounds a lot nicer with the music which is what matters. i dont care if some ponce has been trained to do that, wheres the originality if hes been programmed to do that.

You obviously haven't heard "Learning To Live", "Voices", "Through Her Eyes", "Only A Matter Of Time" or even the epic "A Change Of Seasons" by the band you despise so much? Because if anyone can say that these songs are about chops first and then the songwriting, than there's something deeply wrong with him/her... All the songs mentioned have outstanding emotion and lyrics, not to mention superb musicianship.

So, the "higher range" is the sole thing by which to judge singers?!? :tickled:
I personally appreciate when the vocalist has a somewhat raspy voice, in the vein of Russell Allen, Dio, Daniel Heiman, Jeff Scott Soto or Jorn Lande, but I like the soft voice like the one Mikael has, cause it has a nice colour and it's very expressive. The distinct personality is what seek with the singer. I personally don't give a rats ass how high can a vocalist pitch, just look at that junkie from Depeche Mode, he has a great and distinct baritone voice...

It seems most folks into metal are most easily amazed by 2 things: the singers who can sing really really high and the players who can play really really fast. The content behind the high pitch/speed don't matter that much, apparently... :erk:
