Stephen King was evil to regress The Dark Tower in time with the excellent Wizard And Glass and then leave the series dead for so fucking long. EVIL. EVIL. I actually thought it would never be completed, but the news is great indeed; I can't wait for the next installments now. One thing I didn't like however(although in general I have very much enjoyed the Dark Tower series so far) was how surreal it was getting. I admire King's ability to (usually) weave science fiction/horror/supernatural elements successfully into real-life situations and settings to the point of making them almost scarily believable, but nearing the end of The Wastelands, King was starting to just write stupidly surreal things in my opinon. The most potent memory I have is when they find Dorothy's red shoes and they set about tapping them or something to open the big doorway on the highway (or something like that) and it was just getting silly I think. He's done that in a couple other novels too; spoiled a good story by making the supernatural/horror elements far too incredible.
I think my favourite King works are the Bachman Books. There's something about them that is so.....despairing. I dunno, but the reason they resound more strongly with me is because they are, for the most part, realistic and devoid of aliens and monsters and magic. Everyone knows the scariest monsters and aliens are the ones you can't see, but not everyone accepts it. Harsh reality is the most potent of aggressors, and the way King can manipulate reality in a futuristic sense to leave a desolate wasteland of dead human emotion and morality is something I think he will always do best.
