So, I (finally) got my own computer this week...Best Buy had a nice deal on a Gateway FX desktop...Intel quad-core 6600 (2.4GHz/core), 3MB dual-channel DDR2 RAM, 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT video card, 500GB HD, 15-1 memory card reader slots, and a DVD writer drive (installed an extra DVD drive as well so I can use DVD shrink to copy DVDs in one step like I usually do
). Oh, and the icing on the cake was the 22" widescreen LCD monitor...frikkin sweet. I'm pretty happy...hell, even the keyboard is great...extremely quiet/soft keys, and ergonomic without being those gay "broken apart" type.
AND, of course it runs Vista (home premium). Overall I really dig it...the interface is pretty slick, graphically pleasing, and nothing too radically different so that I didn't know WTF I was doing right away. The compatibility issues pertain to my 2 external HDs, only one of which had a ton of stuff on it, but I can access it over my network to the old XP system, so not a big deal. Also, I have two printers, and my old one wasn't recognized...again, no biggy there.
I'm still in a euphoric state over my new system and how fast everything is, and that may be tainting my judgement, but Vista gets a thumbs-up from me. SP1 is scheduled for public release in March, so it will be interesting to see what effect that has on certain issues. Here's a shot of everything...
