Official Off Topic Thread

So, I (finally) got my own computer this week...Best Buy had a nice deal on a Gateway FX desktop...Intel quad-core 6600 (2.4GHz/core), 3MB dual-channel DDR2 RAM, 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT video card, 500GB HD, 15-1 memory card reader slots, and a DVD writer drive (installed an extra DVD drive as well so I can use DVD shrink to copy DVDs in one step like I usually do :D). Oh, and the icing on the cake was the 22" widescreen LCD monitor...frikkin sweet. I'm pretty happy...hell, even the keyboard is great...extremely quiet/soft keys, and ergonomic without being those gay "broken apart" type.

AND, of course it runs Vista (home premium). Overall I really dig it...the interface is pretty slick, graphically pleasing, and nothing too radically different so that I didn't know WTF I was doing right away. The compatibility issues pertain to my 2 external HDs, only one of which had a ton of stuff on it, but I can access it over my network to the old XP system, so not a big deal. Also, I have two printers, and my old one wasn't recognized...again, no biggy there.

I'm still in a euphoric state over my new system and how fast everything is, and that may be tainting my judgement, but Vista gets a thumbs-up from me. SP1 is scheduled for public release in March, so it will be interesting to see what effect that has on certain issues. Here's a shot of everything...

The Setup
My Desktop :D

proulxski, in your "2nd episode" further up the page, you remind me a bit of Penn from Penn & Teller :)

must be midterms week, because with the exception of a brief nap last night, I haven't slept since saturday morning:erk: The soda machine in my building is broken so I'm making tea to get my caffeine fix so that I'm not completely dead when I go to school in 4 hours

Sounds like you need a coffee pot. I've done some of my best work hopped up on caffeine.:goggly:

Coffee is bad for you. Just get a shitload of PCP and you should be pretty well off.

Employers hand out Crystal Meth to workers in Thailand so they can work for 3-4 days straight. You might loose some teeth and pick half your face off but if it's energy and motivation you want than look no further. Only kidding of course. I knew someone addicted to it..:erk:

so yeah, the new Bodom album leaked, and its fuckin slammin as all hell. This is the album that should have followed Hate Crew, not AYDY (even tho I did like AYDY). I'd even have to say its probably their heaviest album, parts remind me of thrash bands like Testament and Exodus. Good to see at least one of my favorite bands that have a new album out this year did a good job with it (after my utter disappointment in the new Rage album).

I wish i could go see their Euro tour only because the mighty Moonsorrow will open (and destroy them).

Anyway, back off topic, drug addiction sucks man. I've seen a lot of people who are addicted to a lot of stuff and it's never a pretty thing. Scares the shit outta me to be honest, which is why i'm not really willing to try anything hard. I've been known to enjoy some reefer, and there are probably a few other things I'd be willing to try (I'd totally be into trying shrooms at least once... that sounds fun as hell. tried a small dose once before and it didn't do anything but make me suuuuuuuuuper stoned and awesome at video games), but I'm not down with the whole addiction thing. In general I'm happy with a few beers and some Tekken 5.

I know exactly what you mean. As I mentioned before, I knew a guy who was addicted to Meth and it literally destroyed his entire life. Wife and kids left him and he had to sell everything he had. Guitars, CDs, LPs etc just to finance it. Not to mention he would ask me every week for a "loan". "Dude, just lend me a fucking Jackson, I'll pay you back".

Another guy I worked with in the tire shop was a heroin addict. He came in one day and just slept for 8 hours. To the point where nobody could wake him up. It wasn't until we where all getting ready to leave that he admitted that he had been up for two days straight doing pills and heroin. No one saw him for three days after that. He finally came back and had the balls to ask if he still had his job.

I always thought, when I heard stories of drug addiction, that people exaggerated to get their point across but, in the cases I'm familiar with it was just as bad if not worse.

Working there gave me enough cause to never touch any drug. Including alcohol and weed (Which I actually have done a couple of times and didn't like it. Although for a few hours Ren and Stimpy was the best show ever made)

it's always worse to actually see it. Right now my buddy is on a bunch of perscription painkillers (he just had surgery and they're all perscribed to him) and he's working his way off them now. He's doing fine, but said he's had some withdrawl symptoms and said to me "I can't even imagine trying to get off herione". Nasty stuff.

Personally there's a lot of addiction that runs in my family (my mom's side has alcoholism and my dad's side has alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction... you name it) so i have to be careful with my shit. I have an addictive personality (case and point: this is the 5th or 6th time in 2 weeks that i've had a sandwich from my favorite sandwich shop that opened up right across from work. i've been gone from work the rest of the days, every day i've been here i've gotten one, even though i don't really have anymore money to spend on sandwiches) so keeping that in mind i have to be careful with drinking and such, but i'm well aware of my limits and exercise a decent amount of self control (or at least know when it's appropriate to have self control and when it's ok to be a jackass). Still, i know i'd never be able to battle a serious addiction, so i don't even go down that road.

Funny story though, speaking of alcoholism (and yes, this IS kind of funny... some of you will find it sad but it's really not if you know the guy), one of my buddies (a guy who is the roomate of my guitarist and singer) is a full blown alcoholic to the point where I don't think i've ever seen him without some sort of alcohol in his hand. This includes being woken up in the morning when i'm sleeping on the couch by him cracking a beer or two before he goes to work. The funny thing is, this dude is the most functional alcoholic i've ever met. If you sat him in a bar and gave him an open tab, he'd probably drink himself to death so long as he didn't pass out first (no joke), yet he holds down a job no problem (two at the moment actually), has a long term girlfriend, always comes up with money for rent no problem and just generally lives a perfectly normal life. It's gotten to the point where it's not even worth saying anything because he does what he does and then lives his life... it's incredible. Plus he's the coolest dude ever, so whatever haha.

I know someone with a nervous condition who is more functional when he's drunk since alcohol is a neurodepressant.

Careful dude...it starts with sandwiches...then you try hotdogs....and before you know it you'll find yourself in an alley on a Saturday night sucking cock for hamburger money.
