I know i'm surely gonna be insulted or something and i'm already sorry if i "shock" some "true people" but i wish i could know if i'm the only one to prefer the newest version of Mayhem than the old one..basically, i prefer a lot more GDOF and Chimera than DMDS ...for me it's just a LOT MORE inspired..the riff are really insane , the drumming is just so much better , more technical , more varied , more inspired..and the music is just more inspired as well..it's not only "fast , fast , fast" ....

I think it depends on my mood. I think old Mayhem is very carnal and preditorial. The songwriting really isn't that great, but the spirit behind it is excellent, especially on "Live in Leipzig", definitely the defining moment of their first phase. "Grand Declairation of War" is excellent as well but in a totally different way. It's an intelligent and passonate attack on Chirtianity and its life hating ways. It's very well written and effective lyrics. The new album is good but the sudden change in sound seems to be more the cause of fans dislike for GDOW rather then a genuine progression. I don't know, it just doesnt grab me...

What a fucking question. New-age techno crap against the best album ever made (GDoW against DMDS, that is). I could elaborate but there should be no need. And if you think DMDS has poor songwriting you need to die. It's all about FEELING damn it, when will you people learn? It's NOT about the fastest blastbeats and NOT about the most or least advanced riffs and so on. It's about how the fuck it feels.

but even if we talk about feeling , i really prefer the 2 last albums...i mean , a song like "my death" really penetrates me..i saw the band on stage at Paris 3 months ago and this song and Dark Night Of the Soul live made me such a biggest effect than Freezing Moon for example...

I saw them in wacken and they were crap. Mayhem clearly died with Euronymous, anyone who can't see that needs lobotomy. There is currently ONE original member left and he got kicked by Euro.

It's funny how about Mayhem there is only "Euronymous was Mayhem" for some of you !!...and how, as a consequence, you consider the ones who still like their music as being wrong...

Just generic BM really.

Generic BM didn't exist at that point, they were the ones innovating and pretty much creating the second-wave of BM, along with a few other bands obviously.

Atilla's vocals are incredibly suitable. So much emotion, so many feelings. The whole album is quite frankly one of the best ever. Who can deny the genius of "Pagan Fears" or "Life Eternal"? Only thinking about those songs gives me goosebumps.

You are certainly right. GDoW is some hollow sounding blast beats and odd rhythmic patterns. Though I am not one of the people that regards DMDS as one of the best BM albums of all time, it is certainly a very GOOD one. The songwriting is unique, with a lot of atmosphere... hell.... even a bit more epic than most things at the time.

A lot of the vocals on 'Chimera' sound like they were done by one of the Muppets
You think? I think they sound quite typical in terms of black metal vocals for the most part (not that I consider Chimera to be true black metal). However, the spoken word vocals on GDoW just sound cheesy, pompous, and annoying.

I can't really decide, because I prefer the music on GDoW and Chimera to the poorly written stuff on DMDS, but none can deny the atmospherics of DMDS. Persoanlly, LiL is probably the only album that I've truly enjoyed all aspects of. Dead was such an awesome vocalist.

As far as ideology, I couldn't give less of a fuck about that. I think Euronymous was a delusional fool who truly thought he was more brilliant than he was. I'm glad Varg killed him, beecause now Euro's dead and Varg is in jail, so the world loses TWO losers as opposed to one. If some of you feel that this has affected the band's performance, tough shit. The only loss the band encountered was when Dead killed himself. In all honesty, the band is overrated, moreso for their antics than their actual music. Hellhammer is quite the drummer, however, and I believe he reserves the right to keep the band going as long as he plans to drum like a motherfucker. IMO, Chimera had just that, so Mayhem's still good for me.

As far as old vs. new, I say they tie.

And I know that this post will anger people. Let me have my opinion in peace, dammit.
