^ I voted for old. Scary thing is, is that what if their MOST memorable work is in the past? Although, the new is also very good.

Haha, so you're telling me what to prefer? I think their newest 4 albums are much more constant in quality, even if I love MAYH and SL. I'm just choosing 4 good albums instead of 2 good and 2 average.

I appreciate your opinion, but no.
Damnation and Deliverance were not "good" Opeth albums. Good albums yes, but not for Opeth standards. It comes down to Still Life & MAYH vs. GR & BWP. And the winner is........ not you. Cha ching.

Old School :hotjump:

Morningrise > Orchid > Still Life > Blackwater Park > Ghost Reveries > My Arms Your Hearse > Deliverance > Damnation

The entire Opeth catalogue is incredible but their first two albums are truly outstanding masterpieces. :worship:

:kickass:

My ranking exactly. But its almost pointless to rank masterpieces. :worship:

Ehhh.... Morningrise and Orchid? Good god. Learn to open your minds people. Opeth have grown as musicians ... up to Blackwater Park :Spin:.

Yes, they have indeed grown as musicians. Ghost Reveries is probably the best technically. Debut albums can be full of real emotion because in later albums, they have to avoid acidentally copying themselves. Also, I just like the themes of these albums better. If they would, with their new musical abilities, produce an album with the atmosphere of Orchid and Morningrise, it would be orgasmic. But all I care about is that they keep making great music:)

I think the split in this thread is correct between what is considered old/new in the Opeth world. That being said, I am more a fan of the newer Opeth. It has nothing to do with the musical genious of Opeth as I feel that is displayed throughout their 8 albums. Personally, I like the sound of a more well polished and cleaner production which is evident with Blackwater Park (and beyond), as oppposed to the rawness of the sound of the earlier Opeth.

It was that way with Metallica (to me). I consider the Black album their masterpiece, and it's mostly due to the sonic and clean production of the album.

its like having to choose which child you want to live......buuuuuut, I'll have to go with the first four. Morningrise was a masterpiece, actually all of them are, but, even though Deliverance was good, the..... I dont know what I'm saying. Their later albums I do see a progression in songwriting, but it was those first ones that established their greatness to me.

p.s. master of puppets was metallica's best I think, that or kill em all (jeez I'm indecisive.)

I don't think you can split the albums up like that and make any sense. I'd say that there have been 3 "eras" of Opeth, so to speak, with GR being the sort of transitional step into the next era (well, I guess I can't really back that up until the next album, but that's how it feels to me). Here's how I break it up, and I think most of you will agree:

Orchid + Morningrise
MAYH + Still Life + BWP
Deliverance + Damnation
Ghost Reveries

Now make a new poll.

Oh, btw using your system I'd go with the first 4 and using mine I'd go with the MAYH/SL/BWP triple whammy macdaddy trifecta of badass motherfucking albums of all time.

I have always been unable to rank Opeth albums because they are all great in their own way. Sometimes Morningrise is just what I want to hear, but other times(and more often) BWP or GR hits the spot.
I also agree that the eras in the poll are poorly chosen. Nevertheless, I go for the new.

Every Opeth album makes an outstanding musical experience.

and i like this poll, because i begin from BWP. now i have all 4 latest albums in my player (there is no more free space because i put in flames and soilwork there). and i like those old albums.

Secret Answer C

The middle ones.

MAYH, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation.

Their first 2 efforts were...well...efforts. Some good moments but needs work. GR I didn't fancy much.

Overall Still Life + BWP are the absolute best!

I voted for the first albums, on the simple grounds that Orchid was the first opeth album I owned when it first came out and what got me into Opeth. I don't agree with the break up of it though. I think there hsould have been 3 categories, because after morningrise, MAYH was a total change in sound, as well as Damnation/deliverance brought opeth to a third era in my mind. Well, thats how I see it. Opeth forever, when are they gonna release a shit album?? Ever?? haha...
