Opeth Live or Recorded

studio. no matter how good live recordings are, they can never get across the atmosphere of an opeth concert.

Depends.

Most of the songs I prefer hearing studio-recorded.

But there is The Drapery Falls which to my opinion is nicer to hear live. (lemntations DVD. It's a great live song)

If you're going just by what it SOUNDS like, then the studio albums really are the best at capturing their atmospherics and style.

Having said that, every Opeth fan should see them live, at every possible opportunity. :)

The gig I saw last year in Melbourne was mindblowing. Especially now that Michael seems to have gained a lot of confidence on the stage. Theres an extra element of personality with live gigs that you don't get from an album.

Recorded. Overdubbing allows Opeth to include various intricate nuances which they can't replicate live. The recording usually has months of work put into making it a great sonic product... whereas a gig is rigged, played and packed up all in the one day.

There certainly is an appeal to live, but it's more to play on what's already been established in the studio... for instance, I totally went off live to the songs which I loved the studio recordings of. Just to hear the band playing something that you love so much right there in front of you is an experience unto itself.

^I remember the first time i saw them live at the Troc in Philly, that last part is exactly how I felt. I was just in awe of them. To hear The Drapery Falls and Godheads Lament... what else... Bleak, a bunch of others obviously. It was incredible. But I definitely prefer to listen to their studio work because it's much deeper, richer, etc. But I agree with the person before, every Opeth fan should experience them live.

i dunno.. ive always been a live music fan.. something about the atmosphere just makes the experience more real to me. I agree that the studio versions are always perfect and will never let you down, but do you not enjoy the little variations you get at a live show, like the sped up tempo of some tunes, or the added keys to some of the old songs. I love that and will continue to see opeth live until they stop touring!
