Opeth or Katatonia

I don't see how you can compare the two...Maybe some of the older Katatonia(BMD/DoDS) sounds similar to Orchid...

I personally don't like the new Katatonia(LFDGD) at all...

I don't like Last Fuck Deal Gone Wrong.

But Dance of December Souls is Fantastic.
For Funerals to COme is Decent.
Brave Murder Day is incredible. Mikael Akerfeldt's best vocal ever.
Saw you Drown, Sounds of Decay... great EP's. Akerfeldt sang in one of them too.
Discouraged Ones is incredibly dark. Akerfeldt, produced the vox and did some melodies on some choruses.
Tonight's Decision is even better. Akerfeldt again was Bob fucking Rock, and Dan Swano played drums.


As you can see, Kata is the closest band resembling Opeth. Anyways, I specifically asked Akerfeldt in San Jose, and he said he's a big fan of Katatonia. I am too.

Work your way upwards. Best works are Brave Murder Day and Tonight's Decision imo. Dance of December souls is a good dark doom melodic album.

ah opeth or katatonia...
opeth easily, but i listen to both bands for completely different reasons and in completely different situations, therefore it is a really hard question.

nothing helps me get my emotions out better than katatonia though, and thats very important to me. (the only thing that also does this is when i write my own songs when im depressed, they are always simply and short, but they have emotion)

EDIT: just realised this thread was simply about which one i was listening to recently.. and the answer to that is uhhhh i dont know, both about the same i think

I love Opeth but I'm a Katatonia addict and listen to them constantly, along with Nightingale and Devin Townsend. I throw in other albums just to punctuate these three artists/groups.

oh well im gonna re-quote that back to you once you've fucking given it a proper listen, for someone to say they like Tonights Decision and DO i cant see why you dont like it. it takes more than a few listens, and its their best in my opinion. its my album of the year just in front of BWP.

I think Thales does the best job of sounding not like Opeth, while still showing through the influence in their music.

And I never really liked Katatonia anyway.. too... Katatonia.. heh..

I just got LFDGD by Katatonia, and while it is real good, reminds a little of TOOL, it simply cannot compare to Opeth. There is no epic feel to the songs, and it doesn't sound like much of the stuff you hear on the radio these days.
