oh yeah i voted katatonia.

I don't particularly care for your opinion, but to suggest that I haven't given it a proper listen is imbecille. I've given it more than its proper share of attention, and IMO most of the tracks on it seem to wander aimlessly with uninspired melodies. Sounds like something Tool would put out (yuck). I still like some songs, but overall it was BIG disappointment for me.

As for "Tonight's Decision" songs like "For My Demons", "I Am Nothing", "This Punishment", "Strained", "A Darkness Coming" are so perfect in their ambience and melody that it hurts to listen.

Wolff, I don't quite get your opinon of LFDGD either, though I realize it's all a matter of taste.

I've heard a lot about the Tool influences on the album, including in an interview with Jonas, but I don't actually hear it myself. And for me, there are many songs on LFDGD that stand up to other favourites of mine, like "For My Demons."

Anyway, it's just too bad the album doesn't work for you, when you have such an appreciation for the band's other material.

Sure, that's a fair comment.

I don't like it when ppl say... "oh you haven't given it a proper listen, blah, blah, blah". Being my second favourite band, I've given it more than enough listens, and I just don't like it as much as other stuff. Matter of taste, end of story.

wolff's right, LFGD was a disapointment. it just doesn't live up to earlier katatonia. i don't hate it, its an okay cd, but we all know that the songs here end up lacking a bit.

as for comparing katatonia and opeth, that's kinda a no brainer...opeth is better. it would've been a bit more logical to pit my dying bride against katatonia.

I am not comparing the two bands. I said I just happen to listen to Kata more often lately. Something has struck a chord apparently.

Been listening a lot to Brave Murder Day. It is the darkest album ever (possibly?). It is the darkest in my CD collection anyway. I think Akerfeldt's vox in this album stand out more than in anything he did @ Opeth; quite possibly because of the surreal suffering mood that the guitars create. To quote a fave review I read somewhere "here is the torment of a man doomed to eternal suffering and psychodelic atmospherity, and hellish agression. It is professionaly shown on this album how to make bridges from fluent guitar-drums melodies to tough smashing, casting cheerless visions of grey scorched earth and the same grey sky." Words can be piffle, but the sound speaks volumes.

Also I've spend countless nights listening to Quiet World in the dark. There is a resigned mood, and helpness that is unmatched by anything else I've heard. Fabulous song.

Speaking of comparisons, both are unique, and innovators. Scarlet Heavens is the one song after BMD that matches Opeth's epic approach. Different vocals, but excellent nevertheless.

Cheers.

Opeth.

I can't stand Katatonia.

I've only heard 'Discouraged ones', and tht was enough to turn me away from them FOR LIFE.

Boring as hell. ...And TERRIBLY offkey 'vox'

Perhaps you should try Brave Murder Day, and tell me if the vox there are offkey:err:

Yeah, but at least we can agree that it's damn much better

I should probably check out some more Opeth, what do you recommend for album? I've heard their first one is supposed to be as good as Morningrise. Havn't heard it yet though.

Don't worry, I know what you mean. I really wouldn't judge Katatonia on 'Discouraged Ones', (although some fans would). That album is personally my least favourite, although still good after a few listens. Katatonia are my equal favourite band with Anathema, and I think Last Fair Deal Gone Down is the album of the year- no doubt about it.

The texture and emotion of 'Last Fair Deal' is, to me, unique. Have a listen to a few of the new tracks: Jonas' voice is perfect!

Opeth are brilliant, yet extremely different, especially nowadays.

But I implore everyone to sample all that Katatonia has to offer- as each album is very different to the next and does not necessarily fully represent their sound.

Tracks like 'Tonight's Music', 'Teargas', and 'Sweet Nurse' are almost too incredible to discuss.

"How could this go so very far,
That I need someone to say,
What is wrong, not with the world,
But me?" - 'Tonight's Music'.

Tonight's Music is excellent, and so is The Future of speech. Brilliant melody.
