how exactly does this bit torrent program work?

ive just started downloading it so id be grateful if some people could stay on for a while

It uploads the file to others at the same time it's downloading it. I've learned as long as there's at least 1 'distributed copy' among everyone, you don't even need a seed (someone with the whole file). You can see more details like what % everyone has with the beta client:
