opeth writing tips

hey.......im really interested in writing some opeth style music.......i have done all sorts of other stuff and my band has written 3 melodic death songs kinda like in flames/arch enemy etc.........could people give me some tips on writing opeth style music like scales etc....

tritones...use tritone chords. i also hear them use the harmonic minor scale a lot.

hmm I think theory is important when writing music. it's like language what you are speaking... you shouldn't stick to it, but know it.

But, the most innovative bands are usually the "Nell's" (Jodie Foster movie) of music, minus the annoying shrieking.

They also use minor 9ths;

And Augmented Triads;

Iv'e noticed that Leper Affinity is in the locrian mode (E,F,G,A,Bflat,C,D,E), which gives you afew areas of natural dissonance.

But then again Some times just making-up chords isn't a bad idea,
