My most overrated guitarist of all time is Carlos Santana...come on...he's got about 3 lame licks he's been playing for 40 years.

My most overrated band is Opeth...they're good musicians and there's some good compositional ideas, but extremely repetative...I don't get the hype...any comments?

I agree with you on Carlos. I like some tunes but I dont see what so great about him. I think he gets the majority of praise just for him being latin and playing rock on electric guitar. I don't get a lot of the bands that are out today maybe because I'm older now or just became so cynical of the hype.

I can't judge by technical merit but what only what I hear and see. To me Yngvie Malmenheymer is a zero. I like songs with great lyrics and solos that are quick and concise.

Put me down for any of the virtuoso types as overated in any genre.

As far as bands go, I keep hearimg how U2 is a religious experience live. When I see them On TV in concert they fucking bore me to tears. I like a lot of U2 stuff but live I dont get the hype.

I probably would do better at an underated list because thats what I gravitate to. If anything gets popular it usually sucks.

But what the fuck do I know ? I''m just some Momo from Long Island

I too agree on Carlos. He has found a way to musically arrange the same riffs over and over into new songs.
In regards to Opeth, I don't really have an opinion. Any negative feelings I have are because of their fans. They are like Jonestown Cult members. If you speak out against Opeth they want to kill you.
Overrated? I hate to say it because I like the guy but, Zakk Wylde. Mainly because he has driven harmonics into the friggin' ground. I realize it is his signature but, he has overdone it. Kind of like Kirk Hammet with that fuckin' wah-wah pedal. It gets old.

Yeah...I agree with the Zakk comment. Kirk Hammett is overrated period!...forget about the wah-wah.

Opeth can weave some pretty cool textures. I just find them a little predictable and very repetitive...overly stylized. The fans are are just ridiculous.

I'm with you on Opeth. I mean I love the "My Arms, Your Hearse" album but even that gets sleep inducing in parts. The thing with them is they can have a real kick ass heavy part in a song, then bore me to tears with 17 minute snooze fest. Talented, yes. Over-hyped, absolutly.

Very interesting about Carlos, i'm very happy i'm not the only one who thinks that way.
As for Opeth they have their moments, but then it's like hey that melody line was on the 2nd track also, or is this a concept album???
As for Zack & Hammett.........zzzzzzzzzzzz.........zzzzzz.
somebody posted on the Prog power usa forum an article about MA from Opeth going psycho on their fans for the drummer comparisons, he even stated that the Lopeth era was done(Martin Lopez ex-drummer)

I don't know that album, but Blackwater Park has some really interesting parts, but it's not for the commute home, or I'll end up in oncoming traffic.:OMG:

They have some seriously ridiculous fools on the UM forum...scary.

Opeth and tool both share the unfortunate title of having a fan base made up of extreme fanboys... Yeah tool are ok at best, no manyard isnt the greatest singer ever and its not that cool that they use satanic patterns for their drum lines etc...
As for opeth i enjoy all their stuff since Still life but no, akerfeldt isnt god (as every member of the opeth forum would like you to believe) :erk:

In my opinion (absolutely wrong I guess):

Overrated guitarists: Like you have said, Carlos Santana and, for me, Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits. I can´t stand a single note from him without falling asleep. Ultraboring!!. Talking about metal, every guitarist who owns a lot of tecnique and skill but 0 feeling. For me, there´s nothing like listening genious like Michael Schenker, George Lynch. Criss Oliva, Jeff Waters....

Bands: I can create controversy but there are three of the most famous bands that I consider absolutely overrated.
AC/DC: I can recognize one thing. How is it possible composing the same riff over and over again during more than 3 decades and still selling millions of records. During Bon Scott era, they were OK; "Back in black" very good; after that, I don´t like a single song.
Motorhead: similar to AC/DC but without selling as albums as aussies. Well, I can admit I like their heaviest tunes but I don´t like at all Lemmy´s voice.
Kiss: They are a very good but not as big as everyone considers, in my opinion. Very good albums but not a masterpiece in their career.

I agree with Tool. too much pretentious for me.

And about Opeth, I think the worst Opeth issues are their die hard fans, almost as annoying as Britney Spears tenneagers followers. However, playing live they´re one the best bands nowadays far better than in albums. In spite of it, for me "Morningrise" and "Blackwater park" are masterpieces. Last two albums quite boring.

how about...
Dan Spitz. His leads are pure shit.

as far as bands. I think Slipknot is the most over rated rehashed shit I have ever heard. but then again, so is Anthrax. haha. had to throw that in.

I have to agree on Angus Young from AC/DC, I think he knows only 3 chords. I think Eric Clapton is highly overrated as well. Carlos Santana should retire, along with the losers from Quiet Riot.

I have to agree, Spitz solo's blow.... However i have to come out the closet and admit that i liked the Slipknot song Vermillion....:ill: :ill: :ill:

I have to agree with all of these points. I never have and never will get the Anthrax thing. Slipknot...:puke: ...I've seen them live...:puke: ...I'll recover one day.:zombie:

Ok...some of you fine folks will hate me for this, but...Pantera...I think Cowboys and Vulgar Display are the only releases worth a "dime". Ha!

And AC/DC for sure...Back In Black is good...the rest is hokey.

Overated lead guitarist in metal today-Leiho from Bodom, his playing reminds of of Mille from Kreator circa 91, his leads are ok but thats all ok. Overrated band--Black Sabbath, in the day they were good but comeon they are as bad as kiss touring on a legacy of 20+ year old songs, if they wanted to prove themselves they would release a worthwhile album. I agree with Schenkadere about Pantera, Dime was a good player, no doubt, but after the second album it all sounds the same, even with Damage Plan it was Pantera without Phil--IMO

Good one...Laiho...I agree...though I've never seen him live. I did see him doing an improv thing with the other guitarist, Roope, I think? It was horrible.

Loomis too...way overrated...I saw the same type of improv lead exchange with the other dude in his band...God awful...and his guitar tone is like raspy, buzz saw puke.

These guys have some technical skill, no doubt...but I've heard no real shining moments...can't say I'll ever get on of their leads stuck in my head.
