ozzfest

i was just looking on bw/bk and the haunted said that it cost them 75,000$ to play on ozzfest. that is fucking rediculous. i wouldn't pay that.

I would have sympathy for them except that during their show in San Jose I had to suffer through seeing their singer stroll around in a thong for a 5 minutes of their set. That was purely unacceptable.

most, if not all the bands on the 2nd stage pay, IIRC. I've heard anywhere from 75K to around 125K. But, for some of the bands, particularly from a few years back, that'd be money well spent on "advertising" so labels went for it. I believe it's been publicized that Slipknot had to pay and made no money from the tour, save for merch sales, but for some bands like them, the reward can be great.

$75,000 isn't really shit to spend on marketing a band. And that is the biggest fest in america i think. Popular bands spend at least twice that doing publicity tours to radio, tv, and stuff like that.

exactly. The problem nowadays, though, is I really wonder how many bands on labels like Century Media, Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade, Prosthetic, RR, et al. actually get that much in their ad budget. Back in the days of Korn, Limp Bizkit and whatnot, I could see it, but not now. Seems like a LOT has changed to the metal world in the last 5 years. Namely, dwindling metalheads and budgets. At least here in the US, anyway.

Well if you're not headling it's pay to play that goes.
We were discussing going as openers for DIO in scandinavia many years ago but we dropped out when the bill to get on the tour exceeded 50 000 dollars plus all of our own expenses, same thing (but cheaper) with UDO and so on...
The money is supposed to go on the marketing budget and come from the recordlabel

Yea good point. The bands that I know that spend way more are no where near the metal genre...all pop, hip-hop and alt-rock bands. I have no clue what a typical "metal" budget is. And metal is my favorite and what my own band is.....ironic.

exactly. basically, if you're on tour, the headlining band is gonna get paid for playing that show no matter what. from there on it gets progressively worse, until you are at the opening act which might very well have to pay it's ass off in order to play.
also, you won't believe how expensive a tour really is. i'm not gonna post actual figures here, but lets just say that the tourbus rent alone, excluding gas, likely is more than some workers get paid per year.

Yeah, all the 2nd stage except the 2nd stage headliner has to pay that fee to be on the tour I believe, all the main stage get's paid to play. But it's not like it's out of their pockets, it's the label who pays and gets them on the tour. And it's the most attended metal festival in the US and goes from coast to coast, so I'd imagine it's better than sticking a few ads in some guitar/metal magazines.

Kind of sucks since on top of that you still have touring expenses, but you do play to a lot of people. Plus people will check out your website or music from just seeing your name on the Ozzfest website or Ozzfest ads, if they don't know you already, even if they aren't going to Ozzfest.

I'm just getting into this kind of shit with my band, if the right tour is chosen then the money will be well spent.

Most of the bands I know don't earn a penny when touring, even if they're the headliners.

VERY GOOD POINT. most bands are blind to that fact, because they just want to "make it"

what does "making it" mean? making simple music for large crowds??
