Howdi,

So I have wanted to do a comparison between these two for a long time now and i finally got my hands on a P12. I do own the 2247Le myself and had it for a couple of years. Im totally happy with the microphone, probably one of the best buys i've did for my studio.

Back to the P12.. Wow such a nice microphone, i must say i liked it better then the 2247Le which is 1k more expensive.. Of course they are based on different circuitry and are suppose to sound different but there are something very appealing with the P12's airy highs and not so thick low-mids. It just felt more mix ready and kept the vocals together in a very nice way.Judge for yourself, the song that is mixed is with the P12, otherwise just import and mix for yourself!

Yeah. Played with both in the mix and loved P12 even more. Top end is airy but not sibilant. Very nice! The quieter breathy notes are so detailed and smooth, yet the louder notes do not sound harsh or distorted.

I think the P12 put too much emphasis on mouth and lips noises. It's almost too detailed. 2247Le sounded more natural which is a quality I' m generally looking for in a LDC. So that's the one I preferred.

Yeah, was quite fond of the air in the P12, cool that it's cheaper too. Did you buy the 2247 yet Max?

Still on my wish list. Had to get Kemper and some other stuff:) But now I think I'll get both mics, first the P12 for it's air and silk. Wanna use it on some ballads on our second album. Got SM7 and modded C414 for "meat", so 2247 can wait a bit. But that P12 is sooo open sounding!

You should wait. I got a tip from Henke at studio Fredman about Advanced audio mics. Half the price of the pelusos but he said better, and they have the 2247Le too. Im gonna hear a shootout they did with various mic's from their arsenal. Think their most expensive mic was 1000euro, so you can basically get a stereo pair of those for the same price as 1 Peluso :D

I've actually got Advanced audio bookmarked, but still haven't heard the clips. Very interesting. If their CM47's are that good, it would be killer to have a pair for ... for ANYTHING!:)

How about their C12 clones? Have you heard anything good? The price is ridiculously low, like 700$. Too good to be true.

The Advanced Audio CM12SE is very good from the clips I've heard. There's a shootout somewhere online that actually compares it to a real C12, and it's fairly close. They are different designs technically, but still.

Dave Thomas is a great guy. I've ordered parts from him before (I build mics), and he's very nice. He's got tons of info that he's willing to share.

Thanks for the info! I'll definitely look more into the rest of their models. Perhaps even contact them.

A bit off-topic, but still: if I remember right, you were building a clone of C12? May I ask you what are your personal thoughts about their clones available on a market?

Yes, I built a C12 clone. I'm confused by your question, though. What exactly are you asking? My clone doesn't use any Advanced Audio parts, and I haven't used any AA mics before, if you're asking for a comparison. I've just talked to Dave Thomas a lot through email, and on the phone before, as well.

You should really check out Stellar mics. Their mics are made in the same factory as Advanced Audio, but they're sold direct to seller, rather than through a retailer, so they're even cheaper.

Advanced Audio does do a few different things to their circuits, but at half the price, the difference between them and their Stellar counterparts certainly isn't huge.

FWIW, I sold my AT4060 and had been looking at mics in the $1500-2000 range to upgrade to (including both of these Peluso mics). After hearing about Stellar, I decided to take the plunge and get both their CM-5 and CM-6 mics. Very glad I did - both of these mics kill the AT and easily hold their own against "professional" level microphones. Just make sure you put some good NOS tubes in them, makes a big difference. I actually shot them out at a friend's studio, who owns several high end mics, and we were pleasantly surprised at how often we were choosing the Stellar mics over mics such as the the U87, Telefunken AK47 and Manley Reference.

Sorry for the confusion, I should have formulated it differently.

What I meant was that there is a bunch of C12 clones on the market. Peluso, Advanced Audio, probably others. I'm gathering information on them, and you definitely have a good knowledge about this model. So I thought maybe you know some details regarding Peluso and AA clones. You've partially answered my question in your previous post, thanks:)

Sure thing, the best way to find the best mic is to check them all, but none of them are shipped to my location, I'm afraid. Right now for me it is either Peluso or AA clone of C12 and AA clone of U47 (maybe a pair).

Ah. Advanced Audio has the CM12 and the CM12SE. They both use the AK12 capsule, which is machined on the same CNC machines as the Peluso capsule, but are skinned in China with 6 micron mylar and QCed by AA. The CM12SE and CM12 use different transformers, and supposedly the SE has better capsule tolerances. They both use the 6072a tube, but unlike the vintage C12, the tube has been incorporated into a cathode follower circuit.

Unfortunately, I don't have the same kind of knowledge about the Peluso circuit. I suspect the Peluso P12's circuit is closer to the vintage, because Peluso actually makes a T14/1 transformer (the type in the later generation of C12s), whereas Advanced Audio is purposefully using smaller ratio transformers.

I hope this helps somewhat. If you are uninterested in DiY, the Peluso and AA are your cheapest options in that vein. Of course, there's also Wunder, Flea, RMS Audio, etc.

But hell, a top-of-the line DiY C12 clone is cheaper than the P12. I could even build you one if interested.

Thank you once again for the detailed reply! It made things clearer to me.

I'm also grateful for your proposition. I appreciate it a lot, but I feel that I'm not prepared for a DIY mic in my locker just yet. I think I must go through a bunch of factory mics to develop that need.
