pent on alexi

So does that mean I win because I practice good grammar and punctuation?
Anyway, I DID click on the fart button.
Little did I know that I really didn't want to. >_>
I still think Lemonparty and Tubgirl is worse though...

Yep. I figure there are plenty of acceptable guitarists, so I'm trying to be one of those few good bass players that are actually memorable. Haven't really gotten into much of a band environment, however, I mostly just jam.
Dude what the fuck?
So you want to be one of those few good bass players and you say you dont need to know stuff about Pentatonic? I suggest getting your shit in gear if you wantt o be any good at bass, or you can be one of those shitty tards who think bass is just playing the root notes of every chord.

Do you know any scales at all, or and Chords even?

Pentatonic is also a huge part of metal. The Dimminished fifth is what many would consider the "dark evil metal" note, and its in the Pentatonic blues. Black Sabbath used it on their sefl titels song, and it was considerd one of the first real Heavy metal songs. Back int he times of classical music it was considerd the Devil's note, used by saten worshipers.

I play mostly bass, but play guitar and some piano to help me with writing and whatnot. When it comes to starting a metal band, around here is slim pickins, too many have failed because no one wanted the same music I wanted, and no one around here knows wtf they are doing.

Where do you live? I'm learning guitar and my goal is to make a melodic death metal/power metal band also. i can play some of alexi's stuff...although it needs a little speeding up...but i'll get there. i'm so dedicated to making a good metal band right now. I'm in southern california by the way. :kickass:

I'm also in So Cal, but the question is: where?

I quote EVERY SINGLE WORD... if you really want to be a good musician you must know what you are doing, theory is vital... you can't just put a few notes together and say "yep, it sounds good!"
maybe it's good in the beginning, but it the end it's limitating, and you don'tt proceed!

Maybe I SHOULD start getting serious. I haven't had much time to practice and I'm away from my bass all month while I stay here in Arkansas, but I'll start working on it more when school starts up again.
Its not too hard to learn stuff like scales and Chord patterns, you can just look up the patterns on google really.

http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/

I use the advanced room for the chords and whatnot, my freind showed me this site.

I found once I learnt waht the scales were, writing has become soo much more fun, which is the only reason why i do it :p

@ Warheart: good idea, I need to refresh my fingers and get back in the groove before I even consider joining a band of any type.

@ Cliff: Thanks, I really need to learn more about music in general. I have a good ear and know the general basics, but I need to hone my skills and become a good INSTRUMENTALIST.

Something I'd really like to find is for example stuff about various chord progressions and I don't seem to be finding any... For example in another thread here someone said that Bodom "uses power metal chord progressions", yes fine sure, but in other words what would that be?

I like to study stuff like that myself. I can tell what chords Alexi plays just by listening. Not the actual note but what degree of the scale because they usethe same formula in pretty much every song. It's a very popular progression.

And which progression would that be? :heh:

Well there's a few but something simple would be.

Em....Em....C....D....

He plays that in a million different ways with all sorts of melodies over it whether they're on guitar or keys. Sometimes he even plays that as it as and just sings over it like on Hatebreeder and Warheart.

Lake Bodom uses this progression pretty much through out the entire song, but in 6 different keys.

Bodom After Midnight also, Kissing the Shadows rhythm guitars under the solo, Are You Dead Yet, In Your Face etc.

I've been starting to mess around with chords alot more now, instead of just doing Power chords under some lead riffs. Hard to explain really, because I'm pretty shitty with my theory :p, but its just fun to play different stuff.

I was in a power metal band for only a few months, the singer siad he loved power metal and its "the greatest music around", then I slowly realized he was a huge poser and only knew a few Blind Guardian albums and nothing else, he had nothing but Tool and Audioslave stuff :p

The guy ended up being a dumbass, and thought that Power Metal was one of the most popular styles of music in Canada, and thought we would make a killing being the only Power Metal band in my city. I then told him the reason there were no Power Metal bands here is becuse its not popular at all here, and he got a little pissed off :D

I suggest if you decide to go ahead and learn the theory, just fuck aroudn with it as you learn, you'll find some stuff you think sounds cool and put it in a song, thats where you discover your song writing style, and when you learn more and more your style will keep changing.

Hm thanks. :kickass:

@CliffBurton: Yep, "fucking around with stuff" is something anyone can do and it still works. :Smokin:
