My native language is Dutch, so I don't know if it's the same principle, but when something is sung in Dutch, it just sounds ridiculous, while if the same lyrics are sung in english, they sound good

Obviously singing in English for a band that's from a small country is helpful to reach a broader audience. I don't think Opeth would be too recognized here in the US if they sang in pure Swedish?
Makes sense to sing in English to get some fans.
