Well, Dave is a sort of an icon in Death metal anyway. Before leaving Morbid Angel he was considered one of the best bassist/vocalist and not only by death metal musicians/fans, but also from thrash and black metal (not sure if someone here was there back in the day when Morbid Angel was considered not only a mere death metal band, but also being related to speed, thrash and black metal, at least until Blessed came out).
I remember when some metalheads (very young ones btw) were saying things like 'Dave has been a poser since forever'. He said something like: if I'm such a poser, ask yourself how many extreme metal musicians/bands had said 'thanx' to me on the booklet of their albums, interviews or just in person.
Kollias is something completely different. It's like comparing him to Flo Mounier, Yanic Bercier, Inferno or Asgeir Mickelson, c'mon.
Vitek? the guy couldn't be more robotic. Not a bad drummer but he had absolutely nothing to make him stand out. I guess you need to listen better Altars and Covenant to notice the huge difference in the character of their performances.
Anyway, Pete has been tremendously influential too, just ask Kollias, Yeung, Mounier, Hoglan, Reinert or any death metal (hell, any extreme metal) drummer with relative success.
