ill list the ones i know well:

arch enemy - burning bridges is my favourite. black earth and stigmata are also good.
children of bodom - probably hate crew deathroll, but hatebreeder comes very close
edge of sanity - crimson without a doubt
soilwork - i like the chainheart machine, natural born chaos is good at first but gets old too quickly.

pretty clear judgement from anathema is worth it eh?!
but i would go for Alternative 4 to start. that one is much darker and emotional. its real too.

Arch Enemy = Wages of Sin is the only one I have, its alright, but a bit overrated i'd say
Children of Bodom = all of their albums are great, try the new one Hate Crew Deathroll
Edge of Sanity = Crimson = excellent
Maudlin of the Well = Bath
Novembre = meh...
Old Man's Child = bleurgh...
Rotting Christ = Never listened to 'em
Sentenced = BOOOOOOORING!!!
Soilwork = Natural Born Chaos is great
