Plug-ins and External Drives

I've heard many people putting their plug-ins on external drives, but is this only for backup? Can you actually install it on your external drive and use it? Because when i install a plug-in to the external, it never shows up in my DAW (Logic Pro) but when I install the same plug-in to my computer (MacBook Pro), it shows up just fine.
Just curious, because my harddrive space on my computer is getting really low.

Installing the plugin itself on your harddrive, and then the huge sample banks on an external harddrive can work well, that's what I do.

Same. If you can, get an eSata or USB 3.0 external....will run just like an internal, more or less
