Heheheh that's exactly how I felt! And let me add this:

When I first saw them live I was like :OMG:

:)

I got into Porcupine Tree because of Steven Wilson's involvement in 'Blackwater Park'. I'd never heard of them before that, but I'm infinitely grateful to Opeth for opening up another musical avenue for me to explore. I now own Porcupine Tree's entire catalogue on CD (major albums I mean) and listen to them on a regular basis, just like Opeth's releases. And I've been to see them live twice, and they are *AMAZING* live. Check them out they ever come around your area!

Isn't it great to see the different paths that musical discovery takes?

I got to know them through Opeth (ohh!) but unlike everyone here, I found In Absentia boring and unoriginal !!
Deliverance, on the other hand, is godly.

Even though I like PT, it's good to see someone that doesn't. That way it's not all fanboy worship around here.

I'm not a fan. They aren't particularly original, they're just one band of an entire genre. Seems like Opeth fans go gaga over them simply because of the Mikael-Steven connection. They aren't bad, but I don't see what all the fuss is about and no one's ever been able to explain it to me satisfactorily, though I'm sure some of you will try. :p

:p It's goodly!
It's almost a debate, everyone has his arguments to explain his "I like" or "I don't like"...
I'm very happy to see it...
And I understand both of you, it's not a worship-thread, even if it was started by a fan of both Opeth & PT ;)

I listened to porcupine tree BEFORE stevie wilson stuck his nose in Opeth's business .. but mostly just their older albums, the opeth thing got me interesting in finding out what else Wilson was up to these days and got me listening to their newer stuff.

IN ABSENTIA .. its pretty good..... but not better than Stupid Dream.. lightbuld sun.. RECORDINGS ...

he's good for opeth.. gives them that little extra push towards making real prog, that mikael needed, and probably wanted.....

i only have in absentia
good album, but given all the hype many people have given it, it's a little bit more hit and miss than i thought it would be
blackest eyes, trains, lips of ashes, gravity eyelids, heartattack in a layby, and collapse the light into earth are all excellent

Go see them live, then get back to me on what 'all the fuss' is about. Some bands are just better live than in a recorded setting. They put on an amazing live show, with strobes and colors and lots of great riffs and harmonies and it's enough to make one feel like they're on an acid trip.

On a side note, and I'm sure it's been discussed before, but did anyone else notice the similarities between the main riff in 'Blackest Eyes' and the riff in 'Blackwater Park'?
