Okay, I know that a poser is someone who tries to be something they're not. And you should just be who you want to be. But what if you're not happy with the who you are and you wish you could be some other way. Say you like the metal scene, and the life style that can go with it, but you still like Britney Spears or you're a cheerleader or something. You want to be a 'metal-head', but you still have these interests that make it hard to get accepted in the metal crowd. But if that's what you really want, are you still a poser?

But if that's not who you are, supposedly it would make you a poser.

Basically what I'm saying is that the word poser is basically useless.

Sorry if none of this makes sense, I'm not good at articulating my "profound" thoughts.

A poser is a person acting like someone he is not. If a person has different interests and he goes for all those interests, he is not a poser. Posers would include:

Slipknot: they believe themselves to be the 'shiznit' in death metal

White "Boyz": the ones who act like Dr Dre or Snoop Dog. They are confused about their origin.

Im not sure if there are any other kinds of posers, because this sums up all forms of poserness. I hope this has enlightened you.

Someone said to me recently that if you can ask yourself if you're a poser, then you're likely not - kind of like if you know you're crazy you must not be insane... Not sure how well this theory works though.

I think it's healthy to have diverse interests. A poser is just basically pretending to be something you're not so you'll be accepted by certain other people.

Jayde, in your scenario, the person would only be a poser if s/he pretended not to like Britney Spears or cheerleading or whatever so s/he would be more accepted by the metal crowd.

Well, that's my opinion anyway, though I'm sure someone will disagree.

Is anybody ever completely themselves on any given occaision?

Due to the certain presence of social standard that remain on any level, there are concessions that are made by people to conform - be it to conform to the conformists, or to conform to the non-conformists. Even then, the few individuals who are truly capable of being "themselves" aren't "themselves" 24/7 - I know that I'm a different person at work, or with different groups of friends, or in front of my parent's friends, or in certain public places. Which of these is the "true" me? Is there ever a "true" me?

I think everybody's a poser, much like I think everybody is racist and hypocritical (if you can remember that rambling). It's really all a matter of degree - "poserness" is not a boolean variable. It's not on/off, or black/white. Some of us are just so much more obvious in out "poserness" than others.

id rather just be called a music lover, becuase it is hard for me to call myself a "true metal head" when i listen to Emperor and turn around and listen to Dwight Yoakam or Hank Williams Sr. if i were claiming to be a "metal head only" and listened to country or (some rap) behind closed doors then i think that would qualify as a poser.

If you think you are a poser you are putting too much value in the words of hypocrite sons of bitches that deserve nothing but death. Everyone living in society is a damn posers and all posers make me sick and i hate them all so thats about it.

That is exacly what seperates the posers from the norm. If a degree of "poserness" is accepted then it would be normal for a person to act a certain way and not be caused a poser. Those that are extremely in a degree of "poserness" are the ones that are called posers.
Also poser can be defined as being fake too.

People who listen to Korn -AND- Opeth, and still think that Korn are metal.

THEY are posers... huh Jayde??

hmmm... I could have sworn that i posted a similar message to this a few hours ago....????

POSEUR: Person Of Superior Excellence and Universal Reverence. I came up with this acronym in response to some dogmatic true metallers on the Iron Maiden BB who would drink Joey DeMaio's piss if he asked them to, and use it as my custom text there. I agree with Hoser. Being a poseur is human nature.

People, please GET OVER THE KORN AND FREAKING NU-METAL THING!

I am so freaking sick of hearing everyone (or at least so many people) whine and bitch about this stupid band isn't metal, and this band doesn't deserve to be called metal, and nu-metal freaking sucks.

More traditional metal is not likely ever going to be popular in the mainstream market ever, so just listen to the bands you like and give this entirely worn-out subject a rest.

If they want to call themselves metal, and they think they are, then who the hell cares? Categorization is such a compartmentalized way of looking at the world. And if people who listen to them want to call them metal, who cares? Are you offended because you're afraid your elitist metal is going to be tainted by an association with more popular bands? Well, it's not. It can survive just well on its own.

TOLERANCE is a nice philosophy when it comes to culture, race, religion AND music. If it's not hurting anyone, and despite many of the arguments I've heard I am sure it's not, then just let it be.

Sorry if I 'm ranting or sounding grumpy, but I just woke up, and I'm always grouchy when I first wake up.

just what exactly is a "metalhead", or a "goth" or a "punk" or a "grunger" or whatever. that's why I've never liked to be classified. I am what I am, point.

and llamadura is right. GET OVER IT. we all already know how much mallcore (or nu-metal if you're lame) sucks. there's no point in whining about how many people like it and how your "underground" bands deserve much more respect.
