Post A Picture Of Your Work Enviroment

if i could get paid to climb, i would do it for minumum wage for the rest of my life. your life is what i wish i could do. mountain/outdoor sporting, and music for a living. i am truelly jealous. i'm really into climbing and parkour (if you don't know what it is, youtube it). it's hell in the winter for me, when it's too cold to climb.

Alot of boulderers seem to be into parkour (or "buildering" in some cases) in the cities around here. It's bearable for climbing most of the year in this area, but most people spend the majority of the winter months training in the gym. It works out nice that kayaking season ends around October so I'm able to work in the Gym till March or so when we re-open.

In the warmer months alot of us live at the New River Gorge in WV:

yeha, i really like combining bouldering and parkour, since i'm more of a wilderness guy. i like to do parkour in the woods. i just start running and use rocks/trees to have some fun. it's really an adrenaline rush. sometimes i stop on rocks and meditate or just take in the view. it's very rewarding.

You're a quite the after school special, aren't you?
wow.. i never thought of it that way.

Nature guys get high fives!

Ellis, was it difficult to get in with the state park? I've always always always always wanted to be a Forest Ranger. We've got some of the best forests in the whole world here in the Northwest and I'd love to live and work in the depths of one of them.

Big props!

Actually right now I work for a private organization within the state park, but before that I had a two year stint working for the park service as a conservationist/naturalist. I know that state to state agencies differ (and national) with the hiring process in whatnot, but in Maryland Park Service jobs are pretty sought after it would seem. Alot of the Park/Forest Rangers I met had worked their way up the food chain starting out as just sort of general park tech's or naturalists of some kind and applied like mad when positions opened up. Some of the start up jobs are less than glamorous at first (trash pickup, maintenance, etc). Also, the more willing you are to relocate the easier time you will have finding an open position. Alot of states will open up the same position at 5 or 6 different areas.
Also, I'd recommend picking the brain of a ranger in your area and asking for advice and whatnot, most of the guys I met in this state were very friendly and very dedicated to doing the work they love. Hope this helps!

Cool, thanks man! I've looked into it before and it seems that most Rangers around here started out as volunteers. I might give that a try if I ever end up with any free time. I wonder if I know anyone that knows a Ranger?

I drive a Ford Ranger. Does that count for anything? haha

im not sure my work environment can properly be captured in a photograph, so just imagine a soul-sucking void that makes you long for the sweet embrace of death.

alright its not that bad, but i still fucking hate it.

Yea I forgot to mention that. If you have a 4 year degree it obviously gives you an edge, especially if it is in some type of environmental or recreation field. Although it should be noted that (in Maryland or Virginia at least) you cannot simply apply for a ranger position, it is only something you can earn while working in the park service. ALSO, there is a big difference between the rangers of the past and the rangers of today. Law Enforcement Rangers are all but a thing of the past now and will be essentially gone in 15 years or so. All law enforcement falls to the Natural Resource Police now.

Karen that's awesome! You know there is a really cool indoor rock gym right in Alexandria (sportrock), I should drag you there sometime haha. I work part time at a place in Rockville called Earth Treks. I've become obsessed with climbing over the last year, I climb 3-4 days a week now.

I havn't climbed in a looooong ass time though...I'm rusty
But definitely: drag away!
I should really get back to it...
