My inspiration for this thread is Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Part I .

I couldn't stand this album for awhile. On a whim this evening, I decided to give it one more shot and now find myself enjoying it. Also, I really hated King Diamond/Mercyful Fate right up until a couple of years ago.

I'm sure this thread has probably been done a bunch of times before but, whatever. Humor me.

This is definitely the first one that comes to mind:

The shrill banshee screams just sounded completely ridiculous and cartoonish to me and made the entire album completely inaccessible for a few years. It took Erik yelling at me to make me realize that I was wrong. Though I still prefer Av Norrøn Ætt overall.

Another big one:

The fact that Tompa didn't pronounce every word for some reason just intensely annoyed me. This was the first extreme metal album that I'd ever heard, so I guess it's not terribly surprising that I didn't like it, but it took me even longer than the aforementioned album to finally pull this out of the shelf and appreciate it. It's now one of my favorite death metal recordings.

Blut aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God. I liked about 2 or 3 songs from this back in '04 or something. In the summer of '05 I had this with me on vacation and sat on a swing outside of our hotel for a few hours on end with it on repeat. Goofy, but it was a pivotal moment where this became otherworldly and awesome to me. I will never forget that.

There are tons:

Mercyful Fate
Entombed
Black metal in general
Death - Spiritual Healing
Vio-lence
Nine Inch Nails
Corrosion of Conformity
TOOL

I think I will always prefer clean vocals, but death growls, screaming and black metal. (though the instrumentation/ambiance still has to be great to get me to look past the vocals )

Same. That album took forever for me to get into, but I broke into it one night while trying to sleep. Is that record even easy to find on vinyl?

I bought this and the debut based on the artwork (and prices) before I even liked black metal. It wasn't until I got into A Blaze in the Northern Sky six months later that I gave it another chance and it almost immediately clicked with me. But needless to say, when I first heard it I absolutely hated it.

I think I bought this on the same day as the Ildjarn albums, and as a faggot melodeath fan I hated it almost as soon as I heard Gunther's vocals and the ludicrous triggered drums. I sold it the next day (first press too :() and ended up buying the reissue a few years later after hearing 'Satanic Rejoice' again and realizing how awesome it was.

Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse

Crazy album for me to get into, but after a couple years I coudln't believe how awesome it was...Still one of the best metal albums ever...I do prefer Anthems though. Which hit me instantly.

I used to hate Suffocation and I still don't like their studio stuff but their live album in Quebec is one of my favorite albums ever now.

It also took me forever to get into Enslaved's new stuff but Ruun is my favorite Enslaved album now.

Oh Arckanum was a big one for me too. I originally listened to Kampen and pretty much felt very ambivalent towards it. In like late 2007 someone mentioned him again here (MP I think?) and I relistened to some of his other works and fell completely in love (no homo). I was obsessed with him for a while and still really love his work.
