Yeah yeah we all hate metal-core and all it's sub genres like hard-core and death-core and apple-core.

But what about progressive-core? I just found this song on spotify and was pleasantly surprised by the technicalities of the guitar, the singers great voice, the pumping bass lines, and overall interesting medley of metal-core and progressive style.

They have a sense of humor with the video lol. I like the outro section with the female vocals.

I don't really have anything against PtH, but it is definitely not my thing. Too busy, too much metalcore influence, and too scatterbrained. Needs more meat and soul.

The band Comedy of Errors described themselves jokingly as "post-progressive," but they're actually a neo prog band. But isn't neo prog in truth just post progressive? That is, a genre that uses firmly progressive elements to play music that is not strictly progressive rock in the traditional sense?

^ that's pretty closed minded. Music is music. I don't care if you have dreads, wear too-tight jeans, or a turban. If your music rocks, that is the end of discussion.

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Ken is absolutely right.

Shattered Skies = Djent
Shattered Skies = Not terrible
If that song is djent, then Symphony X is djent too. Or does simply using a guitar with an extremely low tuned bottom string constitute being "djent" or what? Lol. Man.

No, the bass also has to be inaudible.

I think it's when you play as blindingly fast and out of tempo with your bandmates as possible. This makes this music accessible to other 15 yr olds.

Woah brah that's pretty harsh...I mean I think djent is pretty bad, but they don't play out of time.

I could never like a band dressed like that

Gotta agree with Ken. Music is supposed to be about audio, not appearance, stage shows, or other superficial things. Unfortunately, much of the music industry disagrees with this.

I have to agree, djent is unlistenable.

I'm not a fan, either. One time my friends and I went to a show by Periphery, and by the end of it I wanted to jump off of a bridge. There was some nice lead work, but when the "singer" comes in it becomes nearly unlistenable.

That Shattered Skies song was actually not bad, and not at all what I would think of when I hear the world "djent." I'm glad the singer actually sung as opposed to all the screaming crap in other bands. In the end, I guess it boils down to overly-specific genre labeling, which is slightly annoying in the first place. Can't music just be music?

I could possibly see why someone may see a few of the riffs in "Lords of Chaos" as in the djent style, but other than that, I can't think of another instance where Symphony X has sounded anything like this "genre."

This is the problem I have with a lot of downtuned, guitar-heavy music. The bass generally has to play the riffs an octave lower than the guitar, and when the guitar is chugging away on the eighth string, what exactly is the bass supposed to do?! I'm unaware of basses that have a lower string than a low B, and even if they existed, the human ear wouldn't be able to easily pick up tones that low.

Lol, I'm not sure if this is an actual genre, but something tells me that your assessment of 15-year-olds loving it is dead on.

Yeah, agreed. That's the only one I can think of with any influence from that style. What I meant was that this song didn't sound anything like "djent" to me and was actually similar to things that Symphony X does. "Inferno" in particular came to mind. The verse riff is very similar rhythmically to the intro/verse here. Basically just replace the "pop" the guitarist is doing on the high string with a pinch harmonic and it's like exactly the same. Even the way it's structured with the guitar riffing by itself and then the drums coming with that type of beat is very similar.

Alright, yeah, I'm being an asshole. But Djent just sounds like noise in a way even Black Metal can't claim to. Apparently it's all about the polyrhythms and such. Doesn't appeal to me at all, technically impressive but not musical.

And it has nothing to do with how the musicians dress.
