BBC Article banning duck feeding in Gloustershire.

I love the BBC.

Similar article, this time in Teeside.

Thus far I'm really only finding negative duck feeding stories in relation to the other effects of bread, not necessarily the killing of ducks.

Stuart Johnston, park manager at the visitors' centre overlooking the lake in Albert Park, said: "We are trying to get the message across that feeding bread to the ducks is not necessarily a good thing.

"There is no harm in it in itself, but if you come back at the end of the day there are literally rafts of bread that the ducks won't touch.

Bread is the major evil here that we need to focus on. LEAVE THE DUCKS ALONE HIPPIES.

EAT MEAT NOT BREAD

All types of bread are acceptable to birds, but ideally only if it is just one component in a varied diet. Bread does not contain the necessary protein and fat birds need from their diet, and so it can act as an empty filler. A bird that is on a diet of predominantly or only bread can suffer from serious vitamin deficiencies or starve.

Only put out an amount that birds will eat in a day. Bread left on the ground overnight can attract rats. Soaked bread is more easily ingested than stale dry bread, and brown bread is better than white. During the breeding season, crumble the bread into tiny pieces so that it is only eaten by the adult birds, and never put out an amount that will last more than one hour. Dry chunks of bread will choke baby birds, and a chick on a diet of bread may not develop into a healthy fledgling.

Crumbled bread is suitable in small quantities, but moisten if very dry. Brown is better than white. Although bread is not harmful, it should not be offered in large quantities, since its nutritional value is relatively low.

Sheesh...we only had a few slices to begin with. And it wasn't stale, it was just expired. As far as any being left behind to rot - no. I saw every last piece eaten. Sure if they gorge and gorge and gorge on anything, that is bad. People around here don't feed ducks very much in the winter, so it's not like they've been fed ridiculous amounts of bread over the last several months. Today was just an unusually warm day. This wasn't white bread either, it was wheat. Wild bird seed contains grain. Wheat is a grain *shrug*

But then again, even if we were feeding the ducks food which is nutritionally perfect for them, it would still be wrong due to all the other reasons :Smug:

I think what's worse for the ducks then being directly fed bread, is consuming all the other trash that people leave behind.
