In my experience the 8.0 version is still the most stable version of ProTools 8 with any OS (Haven't downloaded the new patch, might skip it just in case). I've had nothing but trouble getting the patches to work.. 8.0 has worked best in both Win7 and Snow Leopard in my use, even though they are not officially supported by 8.0. It seems like every new patch fixes what the previous ones broke and every new patch introduces more problems and incompability issues.

as much as it sucks for those running PPC, XP, Vista, Mbox1 etc. removing support for these is the only way AVID can finally move forward and make some progress. They've all had a good run.

on the other hand I'm getting really comfortable with REAPER.

I'm ordering a hard drive today and installing Win7 on the weekend. Time to move on.

While I can understand that, Leopard is only 3 years old :( and I really cant be arsed re-installing everything.

I understand...
unfortunately it's not that easy for me.
I'd be willing to buy a new mac (should do that anyways), but the problem is that my PT cards are PCI-X.
so I'd not only have to spend like 2500 on a mac, but I'd also have to upgrade all my PT cards to PCI-e cause the new macs don't support PCI-X anymore...that's another couple of grand...
so I'm looking at like 10K in total for a new system....fuck that!
I thought "buy an extension chassis and pay "only" 5k" but looks like from PT8.03 on the ext. chassis isn't supportet anymore either.
so I'm having two options...

1. stay with what I have (old G5 2ghz dual, HD8.01 and PT HD PCI-X)

2. Or upgrade all at ones...get new ersions of PT, buy a new mac, buy new PT HD PCI cards = 10k€

I really don'tsee any other option :(

In my opinion they say this is the last version that support Leopard, XP, etc... but as usual, the future updates will work the same. I think it's more a message to push people upgrading their system (for an unknown commercial arrangement) than a true "ultimatum".

and discontinued support for XP, Vista and Leopard beyond this version.

Please Note:
Pro Tools 8.0.4 software will be the last version of Pro Tools to support the following:

* Avid Pro Tools software on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Operating System
* Avid Pro Tools software on Windows Vista Operating System
* Avid Pro Tools LE and M-Powered software on Windows XP Operating System

Please read the EOSS (End of Software Support) Announcements for more information.

Don't get your panties in a twist people. 8.0.4 supports those OS's, but anything after this point wont.

I just started dabbling in PT last night. Open up a session, loaded some tracks, crash.

Opened it back up again. Started mixing a song, freeze.

yeah, can someone tell me why so many people use PT instead of reaper? fuu.
