Pro Tools 9

dig .. dude I hear ya, and ya My post was def a bit over aggressive. Apologies all around :)

No worries dude, I certainly don't wanna be stirring shit around here cuz ye're all such cool guys with so much collective knowledge to share. If I piss anyone off with any of my posts, I'd rather they just told me so and I'll happily act upon it, like an adult.
That and I saw the new one you ripped NSGUITAR!

Even if/when PT9 is pirated, just because some bands or bedroom producers will pirate it, it doesn't necessarily mean that they'll be able to use it efficiently. There's plenty of plugins floating around the web at the mo - most people who grab 'em don't have a clue how to use them, they just think they need them and that having them is cool.
If anything it may work out in our favour as when accepting a mixing job, I sure as hell would like to receive more PT sessions as opposed to a zip/rar consisting of a mess of DIs and Guitar Pro MIDI.

I know. I think that's what Owen meant also. He was just saying the stigma of ProTools being exclusive/special/"the best" to people who don't know any better is likely to go away over time since it will be much more easily available to a larger group of people now... which in turn means we won't have so many people asking us if we use ProTools or not, as if the DAW we use directly correlates with our level of quality. I'm sure all of the Logic/Reaper/Cubase/etc. users here have been asked by someone who doesn't know any better whether or not we use ProTools and received some sort of snide comment in return after saying no. hah

Its all fun and games ya know. Seriously, I totally admit I come off harsh as fuck, but 98% of the time I don't realize people aren't taking it as jokingly as I like to think. Maybe its just the way my brain works, life is good have a laugh and enjoy.

Yeah, fuck it - life's too short! :)

Anyways, back on topic - yes, PT9 will be pirated to hell and back, but experienced engineers who actually know how to use it, their hardware, their plugins and most importantly, their ears will always have an advantage over these bedroom producers.

Me?
I may move to PT9 full-time further down the road...depends how my business kicks off once I get all the gear I need.
I've kept my Fast Track Pro w/ 7.4 M-Powered to maintain compatibility and have rarely had to use it. At the moment I'm tracking drums on an e-kit and am loving the workflow I get with MIDI drums! I just can't justify moving to a potentially slower DAW for the sake of a few pros which (at the moment) are outweighed by the cons.

Now if I had your retirement plan guitarguru (it's John, correct?)...! :D

Yeah. I might be totally off here, but I don't think piracy is that big of a deal when it comes to DAW's and such, since most of the people who work in the industry professionally (full-time and semi-pro audio engineers) understand that when they're pirating such a product, they're actually hurting their own industry. I honestly don't know many AE's at all who are willing to use illegal software to make money.

Aren't we still waiting for NSGUITAR to post screenies of his iLok account?

Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. For example, Adobe have never taken huge anti-piracy measures (serial key...done!) but they know that all of the college kids who learn their products are potential customers if they (pirates) ever hope to make a living using their products. I believe Microsoft or some anti-piracy organisation even offer rewards to people who report businesses using pirated software - perhaps Avid should introduce such a reward scheme! :)

You guys are missing the point. Obviously people who have experience/knowledge/skills/nice outboard hardware/good ears are going to know what they're doing better than some kids with pirated copies of ProTools. I'm pretty sure we all know that. That wasn't the point. The point was that when it gets pirated and everyone can obtain it easily maybe the exclusive/special stigma of ProTools will go away and uninformed people will stop caring so much about what DAW we use.

Jason actually, but yea. I can see that for sure. It is all about comfortability, but we also have to realize how many of these bedroom warriors we really have on the site that just want to say "YES I HAVE PRO TOOLS!"

I love the workflow in PT. I always have and for me thats 90% of the battle. The less button pushing I have to do and the less navigation I have to do the faster I will be able to complete projects.

This is a very exciting time, I cant wait to get my hands on it really. BUT I do have to say this is Avid, and they are not without their own flaws as a company. This is why I wait to see some more opinions on how it runs with 3rd party hardware.

Nah, you'll still have people going "It's the industry standard, you just gotta use Pro-Tools!"
When I was in New York in '08, I was outside a bar having a cigarette and actually overheard a conversation a group of "rappers" were having. They dragged me into the conversation and were shocked to hear me speak of other DAWs. They were convinced that you can only make good music using Pro-Tools. I was blown away!
Personally, I think the whole "PT is the industry standard" thing is primarily an American thing...For example, Cubase has quite a strong European userbase.
I once had a very heated debate over PMs with James Murphy regarding this same topic. Apparently, in order to succeed in this industry, you need to be using Pro-Tools and a certain Mr. Sturgis actually bought into the hype...look what that got him!

Well you need to realize they all HAVE to use Antares also. you mention Melodyne and they are like WTF is that!

James is pretty dead on when it comes to this. Now I am not saying you CANT be big time if you use something other then Pro Tools, BUT it is the standard in the industry. All of the worlds top studios use Pro Tools, as do 99% of the producers we love and listen to.

Now don't confuse what I am saying with you cant get the Br00talz without Pro Tools, but there is an air of legitimacy it lends to a studio, especially in my case editing scores for films and doing a lot of movie work, when I can tell someone Oh just send me your Project file, and boom everything is already there. No need to have them export stems / wav files and have them zip and send them just cause you couldn't afford Pro Tools back in the day. Now there is no excuse not to have it really. I mean $599 most of us spend twice that on 1 studio monitor.

It should be in every studio as a viable option to use on projects. especially if you do a lot of collaborative work.

Yeah, editing in PT is a dream. If it had slip editing I'd move in a heartbeat!

Yeah, I do agree. But if you're tracking and mixing all of your own projects, it doesn't really matter what DAW you're using!
Coming back to what I said earlier, which you touched upon - once it is pirated and kiddies are using it, at least it means that we'll get proper sessions for mixing and not a shite rar/zip full of disorganised Dis and Guitar Pro MIDI! :D

PT9 is working very well here on MOTU PCIe-424 with a 24io and 2408 MK3 using all 32 analogue ins and outs
Much more stable than 8

I got PT8 M-Powered with Music Production Toolkit 2
Do i get any discounts / whatever for PT9?

Also, I wouldn't want to switch to PT9 if I had to buy some toolkit for 1k just to get the multitrack Beat-Detective etc.

Yes that right, you can crossgrade from M-Powered at a discount, MPTK is dead now so that gets you nothing as its all included in 9
sell you MPTK Asset on ebay to a 7 or 8 user
