To chorus, or not to chorus...

Brand new Zierler lyric video out (from the mastermind behind Beyond Twilight, Finn Zierler). Definitely going against the grain with this one, and we're really liking this one!

Finn Zierler (BEYOND TWILIGHT) - keyboards
Kelly Sundown Carpenter (BEYOND TWILIGHT, FIREWIND, DARKOLOGY) - lead vocals
Per Nilsson (SCAR SYMMETRY, KAIPA) - guitars
Truls Haugen (INSENSE, CIRCUS MAXIMUS) - bass, vocals
Bobby Jarzombek (FATES WARNING, HALFORD, SPASTIC INK) - drums
Mixed by Jacob Hansen (VOLBEAT, AMARANTHE, DESTRUCTION)

Ah man, I like a lot of those musicians but I just didn't like that song at all.

So today I decided to listen to something else by Fates Warning since Awaken the Guardian doesn't move me like most people here, so:

YES...THIS!

Are those the only two Fates Warning albums you've heard? Because that one isn't terrible, but I'd still put it very near the bottom. Perfect Symmetry, Parallels, and A Pleasant Shade of Grey all do what that album did much better.

That Teramaze is playing now. I remember listening to their 2014 album a bit when it first came out. I also remember why they never really clicked with me - the singer's voice is irritating after a while.

But you know, that post reminded me of another good progressive metal band that I don't think has been mentioned, which is Anubis Gate. Their last album Horizons is very, very strong. Definitely recommended.

There are some Finnish prog metal bands that don't growl and are actually good :p

Anthriel (SX influenced stuff, though the overall sound is more... Finnish?)

Cønstantine (This is from their 2nd album, debut is more eighties kind of record)

Oddland (More oddball stuff with Meshuggah influences)

This cd was not instant for me, But that is a good thing. Repeated listens to take it all in. "Fuck the norm" I think that sums up Finn's musical vision.

I also noticed in several reviews that people are not getting that Kelly shares the lead vocals with Truls Haugen. "No Chorus" is about 60% Kelly on lead. Truls does more of the rough sounding vocal lines.

I was working on the Seventh Wonder forum today and just thinking to myself, that it is such a shame this band isn't among the more successful (selling) and touring bands out there. Such amazing talent and the writing is so far above a lot of other Prog Metal bands out there these days.

I'm hoping with Tommy singing for Kamelot as well now, that it brings more exposure for these guys. You hear that @AndreasBlomqvist !? ;)

Their last album introduced a twist on their unique brand Prog - almost like they injected some Hard Rock cues into their music, which creates an interesting mix.

That said, if you haven't listed to their concept album Mercy Falls, I highly recommend it!

I think the recent Subterranean Masquerade album is great. It seems these guys now how to make good prog metal without becoming boring or nerdy or whatever and still make very enjoyable music, they also make great use of some exotic instruments which goes well for the music. This album is a great listen.

I've been slacking on getting that album, need to add it to my future buy list (I spent way too much money already this week..)
