im glad mikael made the decision to go down the prog path with GR the. to me the best example ive heard of their "style" would be deliverence the song, so many dynamic changes and climaxing with the most awesome riff at the end it's sound i like and it would be sweet to here more like it in the future

Well Deliverance is my Opeth-all time favourite, just after Ghost Reveries...
But I don't know why people seem to think that Opeth 'are taking the prog path now'... Like you could say something different about Still Life for example? I mean I know Deliverance was their heaviest album and wasn't much of a prog album, but it was a different situation - Damnation was being recorded simultaneously, so we could say they divided their metal and prog elemets on both albums...

i agree with you that sl and gr are overall far more prog but deliverence is very progressive, in my opinion

Hmmmm I have to say i adgree with King Chicken on this, its great that Opeth have more prog elements in GR suh as the song Ghost of Perdition but this can be said about just about all of their albums. Deliverance I adgree to be a progressive song but the album as a whole, i would have to say is not and is an example of their heavier Death metal side.

realistically, this is the first album containing metal that truly ventured down a progressive rock path. in other words...
before ghost reveries...they were a metal band influenced by progressive rock. now theyre basically a progressive rock band influenced by metal.
but i think a lot of you need to get the term "prog" straight in your heads before attacking a topic like this.

longer pieces of music that evolve and change over time... with many ups and downs and varying emotions (for lack of more eloquent words)... trying to tie your songs together to give that "album" feel and not being tied down

don't matter if its Opeth, The Grateful Dead, Symphony X, Phish, Dream Theater, Charlie Hunter or Tool... it doesnt matter if there is symphonic keyboards in it or not... all that matters is that they are trying to push the boundries of music... and that is why prog is best...
