Pronunciaton: Vox = Vocks or Vokes?

vocks. It's latin and the agreed pronunciation is with a short o. It's not a simple shortening of vocals.

But in this case it is just an abbreviation of "vocals", so the pronunciation of the latin word is irrellevant is it not? Unless I'm completely mistaken and everyone apart from me was knowingly using a latin word?

But seriously.... people actually feel the need to abreviate "vocals" when speaking out loud? :err:

That question doesn't come up in german because we don't have such a fucked up phonetic as you guys ;)

I always take the time to say "vocals", but when I type "vox" I think it as "vocks".
I think what I heared most live from the soundtech was "stimme" though

Surely people are abbreviating "vocals" rather than replacing it with the latin for voice?

Even so, it's pronounced the same.

I've never once, even in an audio context heard anyone use the "Vokes" pronunciation.

It stands to reason that if the majority pronounce it in the Latin way, and a few pronounce it the other way, that the few in this case are in the wrong.

Like people who mispronounce/misuse phrases such as "for all intents and purposes", or pronounce "pedestal" as "pedal-stool".

Just to clarify:

With "vokes" you ment "vouks" and not "vokies", right?
Cause "vokes" would sound like "vokies" to me when said, but since that would be pretty dumb to use as short for "vocals" I assumed you ment "vouks".

So the question is

vóks vs vòks
right?

Vokes ... as in Vo-kuhls

unless its the amp ... then its Vahks

EDIT: I know where you're going with this .. we don't usually pronounce the "E" as a separate syllable, I know you guys do the additional little Hetfield "uh" for words that have what would normally be a silent "E"

So just the long "O" sound

you'd just be confusing the issue by trying to throw the "OU" in the (vouks). That could be pronounced the same as "moose" or "cow" or "good"

I don't ever abbreviate "vocals" when actually speaking since I'm never THAT strapped for time, but in my head I pronounce it vokes.
