Question for pondering and discussion

I think it falls more toward column B. They'd be retards anyway, but they found a place to do the same and have EVERYONE notice.

Hard to say, i would say a good 50% of people who play online games where made retarted that way because they take it too seriously, same with the internet i suppose.

everytime i think of stupid iternet people i always picture Master Chief...

@ Beard
Thats possible. However, I think the anonymity of the internet and the laziness/inanity with which some of these people type further exacerbates the problem. See: Any youtube comment wall. Also, you get particular internet trends, once again youtube's a great example.

Also, remember that Car Surfing youtube trend a couple years back? Never would have gotten so big without the internet. If that ain't idiocy, I don't know what is.

It's fairly depressing that our generation has grown up in the Internet Age with almost limitless access to information and is still so sheltered, narrow-minded, and just plain ignorant.

Hey, apparently I'm in a bad mood tonight.

Hmmm yeah but I've always kind of felt that amongst the masses (boy, am I elite) idiocy is considerably contagious, and the increased amount of available stupidity certainly doesn't make anyone smarter.

Well, I think we've plenty of proof all around us that idiots abound. And, certainly the internet gives them plenty of room to showcase their idiocy. I think it's fair to note, however, that it would also have plenty of potential to induce a sort of "mob mentality", which has been proven to reduce the effective IQ of everyone in the mob by an average of 10 IQ points.

As an example, were I to go onto an ordinary, run of the mill forum, and announce that Bush is a genius, I like Sarah Palin's tits, and anyone who doesn't recognize the supremacy of the xtian god is an unrepentant sinner moron who should be crushed, killed and allowed to burn in hell, it is extremely likely that the average IQ of the forum members would plumment abysmally, until most of them quit making sense all together. Of course here it would eventually result in a conversation about omlettes, which does make a lot of very good sense, but I think we can all agree this is not an average forum.

The internet provides a convenient way to get attention, so yeah, it probably does breed stupidity, but I would say that it's worse because most people suck at writing.

Hey Isabel, HATCHET are playing a Christmas show in the middle of the Czech Republic.

I'm gonna go see those guys.

Oh, sorry for taking your SERIIUS thread on a tangent, Max.

Nah, the Internet doesn't make people stupid - it just gives stupid people the chance to broadcast their stupidity around the world.

It's a bit of that, the rest is generally known as deindividuation. The internet allows anyone to find refuge in pretty much anything, even something found really weird or bad in the eyes of others. It won't matter, since they'll find others that agree with them, and build up their own small community, with their own rules on what is right or not. Should a new member join them and tell them what they are doing is wrong, they'd be talked down upon by the entire community.

It's a bit of both really, and that's why the internet always has been serious business.

And stefan, some might be retards, others might just be people looking for a group to follow, but without free reigns they wouldn't be as retarded in real life, right?

Well put. Then again, clicques aren't the monopoly of the Internet either. It happens just as much in real life.

I guess its harder to visualize for you youngin's who haven't lived without internets, but I'd say I run into just as many idiots in my everyday life now as I did back then.

Does the internet create stupidity or merely shine a spotlight on preexisting idiocy?

Discuss.

The internet doesn't create stupidity, it shines a spotlight on preexisting retards. created stupidity is a result from stupidity itself, that is the user. The internet is just full idiots.

I wouldn't say it's because your in a bad mood, because you are right. People become so narrow-minded and infatuated to there own selfish ambitions, that even though they have unlimited access to knowledge, they just don't care about other things. I particularly blame the media that we are fed on an early age. It's sad, really.

I bet i can go up to kid and ask him who is the 1st president of the USA, and they probably wouldn't know, but would know the answer in a heartbeat about who Ronald McDonald is, or someone from a TV show.
