How do you feel about people calling your music "cold" and "chaotic"?

I can't really understand calling it "cold" but maybe I have a different definition of cold. As for chaotic, I can see that at times, but my mind is full of chaos so that works out fine. LOL

As for me personally, if someone calls our music cold, then I know they have not truly listened to the CD and allowed themselves to absorb it...
despite the countless changes throughout, there is a ton of emotion through out the new disc....tons of melody...cold music does not allow for either of those to play through.
As for chaotic...I truly welcome that description...it's all a part of the emotional trip. Just like a person's daily emotions...not everyone is in one frame of mind 100% of the time...they express happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, stress, relaxation, laughter, confusion, fear...and our music follows the same type of behaviours.... when the music becomes chaotic, it's our way of showing frustration, or confusion, or anger. It's just another plateu of emotion...but we always find a way out of it to something more coherent, and relaxed (well somewhat...LOL). ;)

Yes, I would agree with Dave...I have to, otherwise he yells at me.

I fail to see how anyone can listen to the CD and refer to it as cold...I think that much of what we do just goes over some peoples heads. However, to each his own, it's just the nature of the game.

You can't please all of the people, all of the time. So our goal with this CD was to please some of the people (our fans) as much of the time as possible- and give them the followup to "EotO" that they both expected and deserved. The goal was to meet or exceed expectations, of which I think we did a pretty good job, all in all. :)

PS: Is this the answer you wanted me to give, Dave? LMAO

Being called Chaotic is cool. Power of Omens' signature sound is it's odd meter and complexity .....but Cold?? :err:
Our other signature sound is our MELODIES!!!!

We write with or hearts, with emotion and thought for after all , we are PROGRESSIVE, which is a style that should hold no boundaries.

Not everyone is able to comprehend odd meters etc
and posts; negative or positive are welcomed, unless they attack us personally without cause or justification.

regardless, I am proud of the music we create and specially playing in my favorite band

PS- my 3 year old daughter dances to our music and that to me says it all. I would not call that COLD :)

Thanks for the answers, guys!!

Like I said, I don't understand the "cold" label that is put on your music. People often say Zero Hour's music is "cold" too. That just seems so totally off base to me. But everyone has different perspectives.

Alex, I don't know if you read my post below or not, but my 3-year-old son has been jamming to you guys too!

The new motto for PofO......"Music that even 3-year-olds can enjoy!!"

Take care,
Stacy

Stacy, I think some people call music cold when it isn't the mainstream lowest-common-denominator stuff. The masses will always gravitate to the simple stuff, and anything remotely challenging will always sell obscene amounts because it doesn't require effort.

case in point (I was arguing with someone this morning), Foreigner. a 2nd rate Bad Company imitation. I cringe when I hear lame lyrics like Hot Blooded, urrrgh.

simple music can be good and entertaining, but it doesn't have to be moronic.

I agree, the only reason why technically inclined bands are called cold is either because of the lack of comprehension (a symptom of this would be the inability to realize that beauty and technicality are not mutually exclusive, see Only A Dream and/or Calm Before The Storm...) or because of the subject matter...I find much of Rooms Of Anguish and Towers Of Avarice to be very dark in nature...the former's title track in particular is chilling.

I define cold as devoid of all emotion.

Are you equating cold with dark? I think a lot of people do. IMO, a song that is dark or chilling definitely has emotion, so I don't think of it as cold. When it comes to music I don't consider the terms "cold" and "chilling" to mean the same thing...when describing a refrigerator yes, but not with music. But I'm crazy!

I think "cold" can be a compliment. Depends how you use it. I love cold weather... and cold, dark, heavy music. Of course, PoO and ZH are certainly not "devoid of emotion"... it's some of the most emotional music I've ever heard... but I think much of "Towers of Avarice", for example, has a very cold feeling.... which is awesome.

Somehow a lot of people came up with the idea that complexity and emotion are mutually exclusive. Of course, saying an artist's music has "no emotion" or "it is cold" is pretty arrogant on the partof the listener -- just because they don't respond positively to something does not
mean the music lacks emotion.

Sometimes you get the "too many notes!" syndrome where people aver that emotion cannot exist in a complex musical form. This is obviously a ridiculous thing to say for many reasons. When it comes to music, so many people have the pretense of objectivity.

Certainly, in some music emotions are easier to discern. Obviously a saccharine radio ballad will be more apparent than, perhaps, "In the End" by Power of Omens. But to say that one is emotional and one is not is just wrong; saying one is more emotional than the other can only be a subjective judgment since you can't measure those things.

Of course Power of Omens has emotion. It's far from "cold". The music comes from the mind and heart and soul.

it feels weird to have posted twice in two days.

Well I've only heard two songs but I'm already posting on the forum, I love it THAT much.

When listening to With These words I imagine being on top of a mountain in the amazon for some reason. Looking down on a beautiful sunset,l sitting on a big stone or rock (I'm wierd, I know) I know the words don't say ant thing like it, but thats what I hear.

U C (you see), bearly any music does that to me (makes me imagine of particular things or images).

So thats proof that POO (hheh, sorry, i can't get over it) is packed with emotion and melodic themes and melody.
