triggers are little devices, kinda like microphones, that you place on the side of your drumheads. essentially they turn the acoustic sound of the bass drum hit into a simple on/off (1/0) electric signal which can then can be used to 'trigger' a sample to be played. the slightest hit will register as a 1 and hence regulates the sound of that drum.

Doc from vader uses them on LITANY.
