Why is Deliverance promoted as a "heavy" album? Sure, the first song is pretty heavy, but the rest has a lot of soft spots. A Fair Judgment and For Absent Friends are completely soft. So, help me out - did I miss something?

Because For Absent Friends is just a short instrumental piece and except a fair judgement the album is a very heavy one ?

and the album seems to have a really tight (almost sterile) and evil sound...that is extremely heavy.

C'mon... How is A Fair Judgment "Heavy". Maybe at the end, but there's no growling at all. Plus, there's a lot of soft singing in Deliverance and Master's Apprentices.

Damnation was promoted as being a soft album, and it is. Completely. So, again, I ask the question... We know Opeth are capable of creating songs with no soft parts (ie Wreath) - why is this album decidedly NOT heavy???

I've always seen Blackwater Park as the darkest and heaviest album that they've done for some reason. I guess Deliverance is considered to be the heaviest because it has so many heavy riffs such as the first few minutes of Masters Apprentices, the outro of Deliverance, all of Wreath, and the whole crazy intro to the By the Pain I see in Others...just to name a few.

Yea, at the judgement is heavy. The riff at the end is one of the heaviest riffs I've heard. As Akerfeldt says: Just because it's mellow doesn't mean it's any less heavy.

yeah, heavy doesnt mean it has to be distorted and growled, i think to rid the disease is a very heavy song, but yeah, delivereance is an obscenely heavy album, how can you say the song deliverance isnt heavy because of a little melody, that makes the heavy parts all the more heavy, and a fair judgement is really heavy, the whole song. still i think blackwater park is the best album theyve done so far

Ok this comment above is just stupid. MA and Deliverance are very heavy , That "first song you speak of is called wreath btw" Just because there is some soft riffs here an there doesnt make it a soft album!? If you want 10 minits of pure death metal and screaming and no brakes go listen to cryptopsy or something. I love Opeth and so do a ton of other people because of the musicianship and there creativity. I love heavy riffs but its fascinating how they can change the mood in such a split second, And On AFJ The outro riff is heavy actually, But just because one song and a 2 minute instrumental piece are somewhat mellow doesnt mean the entire album isnt heavy. This thread is retarted some moderator ban him for ignorant comments. Wwallinga=n00b

If your entire definition of heavy = downtuned, chugging non-melodic riffs with growling , then yes...deliverance is not an entirely heavy and only heavy album for Opeth. But i think heavy can mean a lot of things: Dark, evil, thick and loud, mood, atmosphere, and vibe...etc. These are all things Deliverance delivers (no pun intended) very well in my opinion. If you want a childish text book "heavy" album, go listen to Evoken. ;)

Heavy means it weighs a lot, and neither damnation or deliverance hold much weight at all, in terms of them being good.
you should watch how you speak, when you are the one with justin timebrlake for an avatar.
