I know that Aphotic has been out for some time but I just recently got around to going to Best Buy to pick it up. Yikes - it has been awhile since I was at a Best Buy but holy cow has the CD section all but disappeared.
I did not find Aphotic. I did not even find Novembers Doom slot. What the hell?
Old habits die hard man - I appreciate the convenience of itunes but I simply miss the experience of going to the record store (R.I.P. Metal Haven, too!) getting the disc I have been waiting for; opening it in the car (Where is a dime so I can break this infernal plastic wrapper? Why is this sticker at the top so frickin' hard to get off?); throwing it in the CD player and driving around while experiencing the new album at maximum volume with the windows down. Then I get home, throw it in the stereo and flip through the liner notes. And geez - is it weird to admit I love the smell of a new CD?
So after this disappointing visit to Best Buy, I went home and bought the album from itunes. It downloaded. I added it to my playlist. I listened through my tiny earbuds. No book to flip through. No new car smell.
Sure I could have ordered it. I should have taken advantage of the preorder t-shirt deal. But I just figured I would pick it up at Best Buy next time I was there. I will go out of my way next time to make sure I preorder.
I lament the death of physical entertainment media. I abhor the nothingness that is digital music transfer, movie streaming and ebooks. Is it too soon to feel nostalgic for record stores, video stores and book stores? Rest in peace CDs.
