The age of DVD rules! The Zeppelin DVD is awesome! The Early Years (Maiden) is essential! It just keeps getting better.....methinks. Anyway, this below from Blabbermouth!!!

RAINBOW: Classic 1977 Concert To Receive DVD Release - Nov. 25, 2005
According to a posting on Deep-Purple.net, RAINBOW's 1977 concert in Munich, Germany is finally being prepared for official DVD release. This is the only known concert by the Blackmore / Powell / Dio incarnation of the band to be filmed in full. It will appear first in Japan, probably as a two single-layer disc NTSC set. Contrary to the impression given in some news sources, it WILL then appear in the rest of the world early in 2006 but as a single-disc dual layer release. The European edition will contain an extra commentary, written by RAINBOW biographer Roy Davies, extra packaging, etc. As well as the full concert (including guitar demolition and some great shots of the famous electronic rainbow), there are interviews, extra RAINBOW promos etc.

This show has been bootlegged extensively in a number of formats, but this new release will be pristine quality with remastered audio etc. Those who have seen the test copy say it's excellent. For those who never saw RAINBOW in their early days, a real treat. For those who did, a reminder of what an awesome band they were at the time.

You can pre-order this now at the Deep Purple Appreciation Society mail-order, (search with the title "Rockpalast 77").

Here's the tracklist :

01. Kill The King
02. Mistreated
03. 16th Century Greensleeves
04. Catch The Rainbow
05. Long Live Rock 'n' Roll
06. Man On The Silver Mountain (Blues, Stagestruck, Silver Mountain (Reprise))
07. Still I'm Sad (Drum Solo)
08. Do You Close Your Eyes (incl. Guitar Solo - End Smashing Guitar)

Looks like the "On Stage" setlist.

In anycase that's a DVD worth having

NP: Sieges Even - 'Sequence III: Unbreakable'

The sound on that Munich show is incredible. Will be nice to see it on video...

That's brilliant that Greensleeves is on it cos that is my favourite Rainbow song of all time, it's absolutely incredible. And funnily enough I heard it on the radio yesterday, on Planetrock, so that was a nice surprise, first time I've ever heard them play that one.

Simply awesome!

The Dio lead Rainbow is among the best line-ups to ever record music, IMO. Blackmore is a god among men. Rainbow rules.

Can't WAIT to hear the remastered sound.

Hopefully, this is a trend that will take-off. I'd love to see 'classic era' shows from the following:

- Dio era Sabbath
- late 70s Priest
- Hughes/Coverdale era Purple
- Randy Rhoades era Ozzy

I would be very interested in this if the sound production is good. I am REALLY PICKY about that. And while I'm on the subject, has anyone out there bought the remastered versions of Rising and Long Live Rock N Roll? I loved those albums in my youth, but the production was HORRIBLE. I'd like to know if the re-masters are really much of an improvement. (I've been bit by "remasters" before, sounding pretty much like the original).

Dunno about the production. I still have the original CD version (as a matter of fact "Rising" is among my first CDs ever) on Polygram and sounds really good IMO. Does the remasters come with bonus tracks or something worthy?

I certainly agree with your list. I'd also like to see anything (from various bands) with Ian Gillan in his prime. And while I totally agree with the Dio era Sabbath wish, there isn't nearly enough Ozzy stuff either. I think it may be because not too much exists, but I did buy the Never Say Die concert released last year or so, and it's worth having. OH, and I've heard of some good Thin Lizzy stuff out there. I've never seen it though. Does anybody have this, or know of this?

Okay, maybe HORRIBLE is a bit over-exaggerated. But when compared to other albums of that time period, Rising and LLRnR sounded like they were recorded in a garbage can down the street IMO. I always loved the music but hated the production. That's why I'd love to hear a remastered version, or opinions thereof.

A remastered version won't improve the production...
Only REMIX can do that.

The difference is that remastering is an expression for the processing of the finished and mixed recording, with the intent to adjust its frequency spectrum (if needed) to suit it best to the various equipment people will listen the material on. Not just that, in the process of mastering compression and limiting are applied, both of which raise the loudness of the recording (and sometimes make it untolerably "loud") to desired level.
So, remastering very often leads to wrecked CDs, due to excessive "pumping" of the sound, in the quest for the "louder" CD. Just listen to Exodus' "Bonded By Blood" (it has crackles all over the CD) or Darkness' "Permission To Land" (drum hits cut the cymbals cause it's overcompressed).

Remix, on the other hand, means that the tracks from the recording sessions have been mixed all over again and that process can lead to a very different sound and instrument balance or the production, as you say. But that's something I'd rather not have done on older recordings... Their sound has its sort of "sign o' the times" value to them.

I have two concerts I downloaded from the almighty net, Live at the Rainbow 1978 (Lynott, Gorham, Robbo, Downey) and The Boys Are Back In Town - Live in Sydney 1978 (Lynott, Gorham, Moore, Downey) and both are great! :worship:
Rainbow concert seems to have been released officialy on VHS but I'm not sure about the Sydney concert.

The Thin Lizzy Sydney concert was released on VHS I used to have it but like moron I lent it to a "friend" and it was never heard from again.:waah:

^ The Sydney concert can be seen on an official DVD (reissue actually) simply called "The Boys Are Back in Town". Downey didn't play the drums on this one, he was temporary replaced by GILLAN drummer. It's a kind of official bootleg but sold for a decent price (at least over here).
There's another good official TL bootleg called "BBC Radio One in Concert", a recording from 1983. Their last gig ever in UK, and a great (sad) one...

But I guess I'm a bit off-topic now...

I always thought those terms were interchangeable. Now I see they are not the same thing at all. Thanks for the clarification Sick! That knowledge is sure to help me down the line...I'll just remaster the old versions myself...with my volume knob and graphic equalizer.
