randy staub

For whoever said Nickelback uses 50ms delays on every guitar track: I tried that on the studio today, and even with loud monitors i cannot clearly hear a delay, but more like a double tracked guitar. Is this how it is supposed to sound ?

I did some compression experiments today at the studio and i will comment later when i get home (and my overly excited daughter allows me to touch the computer)

Yep, the idea with this is just to thicken things up without being able to say "hey theres a delay there!".

Kev, i asked that because another user told they clearly heard delays on the rythmn guitars on some songs. I THINK i can hear some 'verb, but not delay on some parts, but whatever...I am only listening to this when driving my car.

Well, tried that today on a mix, it allowed me to open up the mix on songs I double tracked each guitar without making it sounding thinner - i mean, there was less clutter, less loud things fighting for space. Cool, gotta try it more times.

yeah i would think the lamb of god effect is something different than what staub is "accused" of doing.

i've done it before its cool generally put a delay on the same side as the source track to kind of just expand it in 2-d and give it that spacial depth. it can't be too much because you will get like all types of weird noises. it shouldn't even be audible, you should just hear a little bit of extra depth. too much can make it sound bad. it has to be tucked in properly.

that´s why i said i think it had some ´verb or something but not clearly a delay. thats clear on some riffs that have they stop for a momment and play again

That sounds really weird. Are you sure he's not keeping the panning of the delay the same as the dry guitar track? What I hear on the records doesn't make the stereo image feel strange like this.

I must admit, i just chucked the delay on the group rather than each guitar track, so thats why it might sound a bit odd. I'l chain it individually and see what happens. Reuploading in a sec.

I dunno, delaying the same tone panned to the same side seems like it'd just induce phaseyness - there was a dude on here who posted a couple of mixes of his band that sounded ENORMOUS, and I'm pretty sure he did the delay panned opposite thing; lemme see if I can dig up the thread, he didn't post much subsequently...

Yeh, that was Disconnekt :)

Wow Kev, and I thought I was our resident forum database! How on earth did you remember that? And you wouldn't happen to have a link to the thread to save me the effort of searching would you? :D

I discussed it a lot with him at the time actually, and I still have the clip in my archive data. Here is what it sounds like (and i love this!!!):

Its one of the most pro sounds i heard on here, i literally listened to it round and round for hours on repeat every few days! In fact, was one of the reasons I actually bought the 5150

Ah, coolness - however, I'm pretty sure this is something different, as with the dude I'm talking about I remember his clips being longer (full songs in fact), and this honestly didn't impress me that much, the guitars sounded kind of weird and distant, not very in your face (or in my face, as it were :loco: ) Gotta go on the hunt for the thread I'm thinking of I guess!

That brings back some memories! Great little snippet. How long ago was that posted? Feels like years.
