rare prog from early 70s

The first track, "Watcher of the Skies" is amazing, and has a section reminiscent of the section of "Ghost of Perdition" that everyone claims Opeth ripped from Tool.

Hey, that's true!

Don't think he's been mentioned yet in this thread (wtf? Can't believe that's even possible...) but Alan Parsons is pretty good. After all, he did engineer Floyd's DSotM.

I only have The Alan Parsons Project-Tales of Mystery and Imagination (his/their first). It's a concept album based on Edgar Allan Poe. I used it in a class I taught on Poe, and found it to be really enjoyable. Very atmospheric and extremely well produced, which would be expected.

Anyone else heard other APP? Are the other albums recommended?

50 pages is too many to flick through, but I'm sure somebody will know what I'm looking for. Yes are my favourite prog band ever, and I'd like to know of any other bands that are similar - great keyboards, strong voice, creative guitar work, extremely audible bass (maybe not so necessary), but most importantly of all... UPBEAT. The amount of these bands I've heard that are just really long, really mellow songs is boring me to death.
Anyway, thanks in advance!

Kaipa - Self Titled
england - Garden Shed
grobschnitt - Rockpommel's Land
epidaurus - Earthly Paradise
Cathedral - Stained Glass Stories

those should get you off to a good start.

Cheers. Heard Cathedral before and I liked it, though I'm not really looking for metal as such.

I guess you probably have, but have you listened to all their solo albums and stuff? I know its not to everyones taste, but I'm sure it is at least worth a try if you want something Yes-ish. But you said they are your favourite band, so I guess you probably have heard or own most of it anyway?

he's not referring to the metal band, but to an american(?) prog band that released an album in the late 70s.
i like the songs and the atmosphere on it, but the bass is too proeminent in the mix imo and the vocals sometimes get a little annoying. a good listen nevertheless

Thanks for the clarification. I was sort of baffled by recommendation, thinking of Cathedral the Sabbathy stoner rock group.

I guess you know ELP (I don't like them very much, but they seem to fit your description).
I'd recommend "Mediterranean Tales" by the German band Triumvirat. It has long songs, but they are quite energetic and upbeat. Sort of ELP-ish, though I like them more.
Gentle Giant has many upbeat, short songs delivered with excellent musicianship. Recommended albums include pretty much every one of them from "Acquiring the Taste" to "The Power and the Glory".
These came to mind first.

lol, why would i recommend a doom metal album when someone asks me for yes-like band recommendations? cmon people, think.
Well, you did, at one point, recommend Spiritual Beggars, which surprised me. Doesn't seem like your thing. Unless, there is a different SB...

Anyhow, are the recent live Camel discs worth getting for a Camel n00b, or is that the wrong way to go?

Of the Goblin collections, which volume should I get?

Which Gentle Giant? Power & The Glory, Free Hand, or In a Glass House?

Uh... he seems to know shit, and I've agreed with him on things in the past. Just trying to find good new music. If that's ass licking, then I guess I'm guilty.

How's your Vintersorg quest going, FUBAR? Have everything yet?

I agree he knows his shit. Yeah found al Mr V's stuffe on The End records website but I just need to get enough money up together to get em all :tickled:

OT, but I LOVE Mr. V's stuff. Any one standing out in your mind thus far?

Edit: Maybe not OT... Mr. V covers Uriah Heep on Cosmic Genesis-Rainbow Demon. Pretty Cool.

Strange that you mentioned he covers Uriah Heep as I've just started getting into them really. 'Demons and Wizards' and 'The Magicians Birthday' are awesome
