3 months in the making, but really just actualized in less than 45 mins. This tournament will involve 32 bands who began playing a darker brand of music, only to later become fluffy, pink, and tween friendly.

Wow, great thread, I don't know where to begin....

(But after a quick look-through of the albums listed, three stand out completely: Serenades, Dark Medieval Times and Dance Of December Souls. Then rest I could most likely go the rest of my life without hearing and not realy give an f.)

i'm cool because i've heard literally every one of these albums (in fact i own them all except therion, cemetary and dimmu)

Tiamat - Sumerian Cry (hahaha no contest. "COCA COLA BURNS THE FOREST / MCDONALDS FEED THEIR COWS WITH OUR CHILDRENS LIVES / GOD DON'T LET US DIE" versus "IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER THE SON AND THE ANTICHRIST ASHES TO ASHES DUST TO DUST TO REIGN IN DEATH!!!", hmm i wonder)

My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers (whatever, dark metal is actually a more inspired and original album but "sear me" and "the forever people" are pretty good man)

Amon Amarth - Once Sent from the Golden Hall (i don't know, this is the crappiest pairing because i can't say i'm MAD about either of those albums)

Anathema - Serenades (EASY)

Samael - Worship Him (musically cemetary has the better songs but going with samael for the extremely malevolent atmosphere)

In Flames - Lunar Strain (stormblåst wins but for all tid doesn't. the rehearsal tape with songs from for all tid is a lot better than the actual album)

Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus (journey sucks, it's in the woods... without everything that made them good)

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls (it's hard to kill the satyricon because it is AMAZING, but honestly, early 90's katatonia)

Tiamat - Sumerian Cry

My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers

Blind Guardian - Battalions of Fear

Anathema - Serenades

Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey

In Flames - Lunar Strain

Green Carnation - Journey To The End Of Night (Am I a faggot for doing this? I THINK SO!)

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

i think a fitting counterpart for this competition, later, would be to pair these bands' latest albums against each other and see who fared the best in their conversion to pinkage

almost all of these bands peddle absolute GARBAGE nowadays, the only ones that are still even remotely palatable would be amorphis (barely,) katatonia, satyricon, maybe amon amarth...

Tiamat - Sumerian Cry

Bethlehem - Dark Metal

Amon Amarth - Once Sent from the Golden Hall

Anathema - Serenades

Samael - Worship Him

In Flames - Lunar Starin

Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

So in terms of anathema, amorphis, katatonia. I would have to go with katatonia as they're one of my favorites. amorphis is right behind, as they're still releasing quality stuff. I did like a natural disaster though, looking forward to the new one. Both katatonia and amorphis both decided to bring back metal elements (amorphis more so) in their sound. I don't think katatonia has released anything better than lfdgd in terms of their later stuff. The less rhythmy metal on the next album the better.

Edit: i think a fitting counterpart for this competition, later, would be to pair these bands' latest albums against each other and see who fared the best in their conversion to pinkage - This would be interesting for bands that have made a transition to a different sound at all.

it's funny because i'm the biggest katatonia fan ever but i HATE lfdgd. like, i literally hate it to the point where i deleted the mp3's off my computer because i couldn't stand it when they came up on random. i bought it right when it came out and back THEN i loved it but now it makes me vomit. i love every other katatonia album to death.

come onnn, dispossession (that intro guitar line = morose) , clean today, tonights music, i transpire etc. That doesn't even include the bonus tracks!

i did save dispossession and tonight's music from the great big I'M DELETING THIS SHIT purge, but i almost literally never listen to them

sulfur & help me disappear are both okay but i don't count them as part of the album (because they are not, i suppose they are bonus tracks on the reissue though?)

viva emptiness is like FIFTY times better at least

Thanks for this, it helps make the dreary days a bit more tolerable (I gave you 5-stars, so someone else gave the thread a lower rating):

Tiamat - Sumerian Cry (Not sure why this is often mistaken for straight death metal, it isn't and definitely has a cool blackened vibe throughout)

Bethlehem - Dark Metal (Holds my interest more in the long run)

Amon Amarth - Once Sent from the Golden Hall (I dig the first two Blind Guardian albums, but not as much as I dig the older/newer hybrid style on Tales From the Twilight World.)

Anathema - Serenades (Never been a Paradise Lost fan regardless of era, I'm actually not a huge fan of Serenades either, but it's more interesting than Lost Paradise at least)

Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey (Surprised folks would pick Worship Him over this, but that of course doesn't mean they're wrong, perhaps I am, but to me there's no comparison here)

In Flames - Lunar Strain (Yes, the Erics and I are the only ones that picked up on the spelling error so far. Upon an Oaken Throne alone is almost enough to push this one over the top).

Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus (No contest whatsoever, the Green Carnation debut is an absolute snoozefest).

Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times (Excellent debut album and one of the main reasons the exploration of the Norwegian black metal scene was so enjoyable for me)

Therion - Of Darkness

My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers

Amon Amarth - Once Sent from the Golden Hall

Anathema - Serenades

Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey

In Flames - Lunar Strain

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

The Therion/Tiamat and Satyricon/Katatonia were the toughest matchups for me to chose between.

For All Tid is such a shitty record. I still enjoy Enthrone Darkness and don't care.

In Flames was always a piece of shit.
