I was suprised when I saw the contents of this forum. I expected lots of posts about the 70s. That should tell you what an old geezer I am! :D

Old school for me is the 70s. Thats when I grew up. So join me to this tribute to the 70s, a great decade to live in. Believe me! :)

Anyway here's my list:

01 Rush - A Farewell to Kings [1977]
02 Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny [1976]
03 UFO - No Heavy Petting [1975]
04 Kansas - Point Of Know Return [1977]
05 Scorpions - In Trance [1975]
06 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti [1975]
07 Max Webster - High Class in Borrowed Shoes [1977]
08 Moxy - Ridin' High [1977]
09 Queen II [1974]
10 Riot - Narita [1978]
11 Van Halen - [1978]
12 Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo [1978]
13 UK - UK [1978]
14 AC/DC - Powerage [1978]
15 Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous [1978]
16 Styx - Pieces of Eight [1978]
17 Rainbow - Live in Germany [1976]
18 Deep Purple - In Rock [1970]
19 Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend [1973]
20 Yesterday & Today - Yesterday & Today [1976]

Looking at it now it clearly show that I would go for progressive metal when it appeared on the scene. I used to call Rush Progressive hard rock :)

Priest have been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them. I worshiped Halford. Another 70s idol of mine was Michael Schenker. I used to debate my younger brother who was better. he thought Blackmore I defended Schenker.

I loved Kansas in the 70s. Their albums were melodic yet challenging. Their singer Steve Walsh never fails to move me to tears. Their songs have so much emotion. I am so happy they are back now.

Scorpions were one of THE bands in the 70s. Great songs and of course Uli John Roth. What a guitar player. Amazing!

I suppose none of you will know Max Webster, a Canadian band. They were weird man! I loved them and still miss them.

Notice the high position of Queen II. This album simply rocks :headbang:

I always loved Zeppelin. It was because of their diversity and power even when they played a folk song. Rober Plant is such a great singer. One of the greatest bands on the planet and rightly so.

Yesterday & Today renamed themselves to Y&T this is their first album. It was one of the heaviest albums of the 70s.

For HAWK,
What do you make of Schenker's work these days?
And what appealed to you about the 70's era Priest?
I have never been able to get into that era of JP.
I'm just curious as to what your take is on that era of the
band.
Thanks for Another Great Thread!

Your welcome buddy :)

What do I think of Schenkers work these days?

:(

I hope thats clear enough. I miss the excellent combination of melody and speed in his leads.

As for 70s Priest; thats a good question 6. I understand why you would wanna know that.

I guess 70s Priest is more a bit demanding than they were later. I like the fact that they played with time changes and deeper lyrics than their work in the 80s. You should check out "Beyond the Realms of Death" The best song Priest recorded in the 70s. It's on "Stained Class".

I don't know what you heard of 70s Priest but every 70s Priest album is different.

Thanks for your remarks!

Thanks for the reply Mr. Hawk, I know what you mean about Schenker, I think he must have another classic record in his tank before he calls it a career! I'm still waiting though. I have checked out Rocka Rolla & Sad Wings, can't get into them, but I haven't listened to that much later in the 70's...
I will do my homework & get back to you on it.

Well......not here! I can totally see why. It's a great fuckin' record! Awesome rock/metal!

OH SHIT!!! How could I do this!!?? I FORGOT RUSH!!!!!!! Add in 2112 and A Farewell To Kings to my list!!

Have you guys seen Martin Popoff's book "The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal: The Seventies"? I don't agree with all of his reviews but it is a good book for info on the more obscure 70's hard rock bands.

One per artist. Not really in any order:

Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
Motorhead - Overkill
Rush - 2112
Deep Purple - In Rock
The Who - Who's Next
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Van Halen - Van Halen
Rainbow - Rising
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Neil Young - Harvest
King Crimson - Red
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Pretty good list. Neil Young is great! I completly overlooked Motorheads Overkill
