who cares about kidman. von trier is deffo the best thing in cinema the past decade. he has many phobias and that, so i guess that's what makes him such a goddamn briliant film maker. you can't be all normal and do films like breaking the waves or dancer in the dark. no fuckin' way. he didn't get the golden palm thing just cos he won it the previous time with dancer. dogvile should be out before christmas i reckon. ah, amazing stuff...

I really dislike von trier and the dogma stuff. Cinema is a visual art, and even the very best stories without any use of good camera, good lightning and stuff fails to impress me. Both of these can be done together, like take 2001 or taxi driver. Btw, have any of you seen Uzak, a turkish film that won two awards in cannes.

as i said in the other thread, Dogville is good, different but good.

Spun- really good

Intolerable Cruelty- good like

Anytime in Mexico- bad follow- up of Desperado

Finding Nemo- One of the few Walt Disney Movies i like, funny one

The Miracle of Bern (dunno if it's the english name for it)- quite good for a german movie

how is intolrable cruelty? I really like big lebowski and man who wasnt there(specially this one) and i think the coen brothers are real genuis.

Well you know Idioterne is the only true dogma movie of Von Triers. I thought Dogville was a visual movie in its own way. There's so little left on screen that everything there is, is for a reason. It's almost like a stage play, but never boring to watch.

yeah i observed that he lighntened his principles through time. I agree it is like stage play and thats what i dont like about it, in a film you are given the freedom to do stuff you cant do on stage, why not use it.

I believe his aim was to concentrate on peoples acts etc and highlighted it with cutting down almost everything else. I didn't mind. Didn't even notice the lack of props after 10 minutes or so.

and why not do stuff you can't do on stage? maybe cause everyone else does.. i dunno. It worked perfect for that film in my opinion...

but that's the whole thing. that trier went beyond the classic camera work. and his films, especially since breaking the waves, are untouchable in terms of true inner feeling and emotion. for me at least.

and yes, i know about uzak and i'm gonna watch it at the film festival here that starts next week.

I enjoyed the movie somehow, though the story isn't that twisted, but has some nice moments. And Catherine Zeta- Jone is an eye- catcher deffo. For me it can't reach Big Lebowski, or Fargo. Haven't seen the man who wasn't there, but will do this soon.

you should definetely check out uzak. Its a very good film i think that gives you the feeling of being far away and lost without any purpose or meaning. It has a minimalistic view on dialogues but its visually very rich since the director is actually a photographer, the whole film is like a painting.

Yay, time for another bump cause I think I just saw the best movie of -04 so far.

Went to see Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola) yesterday. Such a heartwarming film, with great performances (Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson) to carry the whole thing since nothing spectacular really happens in it. It had superb cinematography in my opinion and a good use of music to set the mood of the film. I dunno, I enjoyed it immensly. I would say it's a distant relative of Before Sunrise at least storywise.

But I might've left some of the laugh-out-loud-stuff from the beginning out since, even tho they were indeed funny, they didn't always fit with the rest of the film. Aah, what am I nitpicking here, very recommended it is! :worship:

i know susie has, but anyone else saw school of rock already? i luved the opening scene, like i could feel his bones smack the ground.

so anyone wants to start a roooooooooooooooccckk band with me?

course, i'm up for it ;) And i saw School of Rock, quite funny movie, though i think it might have been better in english (yes, we have all the movies dubbed here)!
