don't misunderstand me; I'm not particularly in favor of reparations. but when you establish a precedent, you open a whole can of legal worms.

is there an American precedent for punishing or paying the descendents of the descendents of the descendents of the descendents et al? i believe the japanese precedent was only to the actual detainees and their direct descendents, which is hugely important (not just a matter of degrees).

exactly. there are quite a few people alive today who are direct descendents of slaves, in fact most black folks are, unless they're freaking nigerians or something. but the distance in time, for both them and us white peeps is a factor also.
